Annual Christmas Lighted Parade moved to this weekend

Another Le Mars holiday tradition will be held this weekend, when the annual Christmas Lighted Parade takes place along Central Avenue this Saturday, December 20th.

The parade was originally scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 6th, but was cancelled due to inclement weather. Joel Johnson, who has coordinated the parade for the past seven years, told KLEM the tradition was started in the 90’s.

Those showcasing their floats in the parade will arrive at 5pm to line-up; residents do not have to register or pay a fee to be a part of the parade. The route starts at 8th Street South and continues along Central Avenue, ending at 1st Street North. Johnson says he looks forward to seeing new and creative floats each year.

Johnson says the parade is a great way for the community to come together during the holidays.

The parade itself will start at 6pm on Saturday, December 20th; for those participating in the parade, line-up will start at 5pm.

Benefit to be held for injured Hospers firefighter

Community members in Hospers will host a benefit and silent auction this week for a local firefighter that was severely injured during an accident last month.

All proceeds from the benefit will go to the family of Phil Zeutenhorst, who suffered severe burn injuries during a training exercise with the Hospers Fire Department on November 24th. Zeutenhorst and another firefighter were taking part in a “search and rescue” exercise, when an unexpected flashover fire ignited. Zeutenhorst had to be transported to a burn unit in Lincoln after the accident, where he currently remains.

The benefit itself will take place on Thursday, December 18th at the Hospers Community Center. Burgers and steak sandwiches will be available for attendees, and a silent auction will be held. All proceeds raised from the benefit will go towards medical and travel expenses. If you’re interested in donating items for the silent auction, call 712-441-0289.

The benefit will run from 5 to 7:30pm on Thursday.

Orange City Area Health named among top 100 hospitals for patient experience, obstetrics

Orange City Area Health has been honored by the Women’s Choice Award as one of the country’s best hospitals in two categories, the health system announced on Monday.

The Women’s Choice award has recognized Orange City Area Health as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Patient Experience. The honor places the health system within the top 100 of its size category in the nation and is the 12th consecutive year Orange City Area Health has earned this recognition. The system was also recognized as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics, placing it amongst the top-performing hospitals nationwide. Out of over 4,600 hospitals nationwide offering obstetrics, Orange City Area Health ranks in the top 1%.

In a press release, CEO Marty Guthmiller says that Orange City Area Health was “once again honored to be recognized in Patient Experience 12 years in a row,” and that receiving the same honor in obstetrics was “equally humbling” and “a true testament to the care delivered by our staff, reflecting the culture of OCAHS that we all continually strive to achieve.”
