Walk for Heart to be held this Friday

The Le Mars YMCA and Floyd Valley Healthcare are teaming up tomorrow morning to host Walk for Heart, aiming to bring awareness to heart health. Jacque Perez, the CEO of the Le Mars YMCA, told KLEM the event started out of a partnership between the Y and the cardiac rehab program at Floyd Valley.

The walk is held in conjunction with National Wear Red Day, and is free and open to the public. The event features interactive heart-health stations, fun drop-in demos, and mini movement sessions. Visitors can also discover and be screened for potential heart-health risk factors. Perez says she hopes the event accomplishes two goals.

Perez says the walk aligns with the goals of both Floyd Valley and the Y.

Walk for Heart will take place at the Le Mars YMCA tomorrow morning, running from 11am until 1pm.

Fareway donates over 69,000 pounds of ham to local food banks

Fareway has announced they’ve donated over 69,000 pounds of ham, totaling over 5,500 individual hams, to help feed local community members facing food insecurity.

The hams will be distributed through key food bank partners including the Food Bank of Siouxland, which received approximately 20% of the hams, the Food Bank of Iowa receiving 60%, and the River Bend Food Bank receiving 20%. The donation includes a selection of premium products, including classic half-size hams, spiral hams, and full-size carver hams.

Jacob Wanderscheid, executive director of the Food Bank of Siouxland, issued a statement saying the donation ensures families throughout Siouxland will have access to nutritious, high-value protein during the coldest months of the year.

Fareway says the company hopes this donation not only fills plates across Iowa, but also brings comfort, connection, and dignity to the households it reaches.

Sioux City adding more license plate cameras

The Sioux City council approved applying for grant funding Monday to fund an expansion of the Flock camera system, which currently consists of 12 cameras in Sioux City.

Police Chief Rex Mueller says if awarded the funds, the department will use it to add 21 cameras to read license plates. The cost would be $77,250.

Mayor Bob Scott opposed the additional cameras because of privacy concerns and the ongoing cost of the technology.

Chief Mueller told the council that they are seeking private sponsors to pay for the cameras ongoing use in the future. Beginning in FY 2028, the annual recurring cost would be $63,000. The council approved the grant application by a 4-1 vote.
