Indigenous Peoples’ Day
Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which celebrates Native American culture and history. The Plymouth County Historical Museum has been working closely with SunRose IronShell, a contemporary Native American artist, to restore a teepee donated to the Museum by Plymouth County Board of Supervisors member Craig Anderson.
IronShell spoke on the history of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
IronShell encourages and invites people to participate in local Native American events, like powwows, to “lift the veil between Indigenous people and Iowans.”
IronShell also says that internet research and reaching out to Indigenous people who can “show and tell their modern experience” are good steps to increase self-awareness.
