Truck driving through Sioux County sparks 14 fires
An open burning ban took effect in Sioux County starting yesterday, after a truck traveling through the area on Monday started 14 fires that stretched across several miles. Sioux Center Fire Chief Dave Van Holland says the fires weren’t intentionally set, and that the driver didn’t realize what was happening.
Most of the fires were contained to roadside ditches, although some spread briefly into nearby fields and along waterways. Firefighters from over half a dozen departments responded. Van Holland says it’s been a busy few days, with firefighters from Sioux Center helping to deal with hot spots from this past weekend’s grass fire that burned a seven mile stretch through Woodbury County.
At least one dozen counties across the state have bans on open burning due to dry conditions.
