Hundreds of hogs dead after barn fire in rural Plymouth County

A fire at a hog barn in rural Plymouth County on Sunday has resulted in the loss of hundreds of hogs, authorities confirm.

Oyens Volunteer Fire Rescue and the Remsen Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at a hog barn at the intersection of 240th St and Pioneer Avenue about 15 minutes southeast of Le Mars. The barn was completely in flames when crews arrived around 11:30am on Sunday. Authorities say “hundreds” of hogs died in the fire, while the structure was a complete loss.

Le Mars Fire-Rescue and the Kingsley Fire Department assisted with containment of the fire. The cause is still under investigation as of Sunday afternoon.
