The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University women’s golf team left Le Mars with the team championship at the eighth-annual Northwest Iowa National Invitational golf tournament at Willow Creek Golf Course that wrapped up Tuesday.
The Eagles finished 20 strokes under par as a team winning the tournament by an impressive 21-stroke margin. The win follows back-to-back runner-up finishes at the tournament. Embry-Riddle women’s golf head coach Russell Pick says his teams have been close in years past, and it feels great to finally come out on top.
The tournament is tough considering Monday requires competitors to golf 36 holes which requires constant focus and attention. Coach Pick says his team does a great job with that, and they performed well this week.
This week’s conditions were just about as opposite as you can get from where ERAU is located in Prescott, Arizona. With the air being thick with moisture and the temperatures much cooler, Coach Pick says his team had to adjust their approaches from what they are used to back home.
This tournament has gained national recognition with coaches from all over the country commenting on how well this tournament is run. This tournament is extra special for Coach Pick who hails from the town of Kimball, South Dakota. He says being able to bring his team close to where he grew up is always a treat.
The next three events in the fall for the Eagles take place in the state of Arizona. They are next in action on September 28-29 in Surprise, Arizona at a meet hosted by Ottawa University.
