PIPER ENCOURAGES RURAL DEMOCRATS

The keynote speaker at Thursday’s Dinner with Democrats in Le Mars says rural Democrats have to become more visible to voters.

Piper is from Missouri, where there are no Democrats holding statewide office.  There is only one here in Iowa.  But she says Democrat voters are out there.

Piper says she meets people who are desperate for a message from the Democratic Party that speaks to rural Iowa.   It also takes involvement to recruit candidates and involve voters .

It also takes neighbors talking to neighbors over common issues including education, affordable housing, and health care.  Piper says the party has awakened, as evidenced by the excitement  building over the Harris/Walz campaign.

WITH THE DRY WEATHER, SOME IOWA FARMERS ARE STARTING TO BRING IN THE CROPS

Some Iowa farmers are already firing up their combines to start harvesting crops. Angie Rieck Hinz, a field agronomist for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, says it’s a bit early, but…

While Iowa came completely out of a four-year drought this spring with steady rains, it’s been much drier lately and about two-thirds of the state is now considered “abnormally dry” on the drought monitor map. Rieck Hinz says that can be an advantage at this time of year.

Forecasters say there’s a chance for some rain over the weekend in parts of the state, and again in the middle of next week.

SIERRA CLUB SUES OVER CARBON PIPELINE CONSTRUCTION PERMIT

The Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club has filed a lawsuit that seeks to overturn state approval of a permit for the Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline. In late June the Iowa Utilities Commission issued a permit giving Summit eminent domain authority to seize property from landowners who have not voluntarily agreed to let the pipeline run through their property. The Sierra Club’s Jess Mazour (muh-ZOOR) says people who objected to the pipeline did not get a fair hearing before the Iowa Utilities Commission — and the coalition looks forward to making their case in court before an unbiased decision maker. Separate appeals have been filed by five Iowa counties, landowners who object to the pipeline and nearly 40 Republican legislators. Summit Carbon Solutions issued a statement earlier this week, saying the company is confident in the Iowa Utilities Commission’s thorough review process.

ERNST SAYS EVERY SECOND COUNTS FOR AMERICAN HOSTAGES HELD BY HAMAS

U-S Senator Joni Ernst of Red Oak says any deal to end the Israel-Hamas war must bring American hostages home and lead to the demise of Hamas. Ernst says the deal must also ensure — forever — the survival of Israel. Ernst made her comments during a speech at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual convention last week, shortly after returning from a trip to the Middle East. Ernst has made four trips to Israel since the October 7th attacks, including one in late August. Ernst says the murder of American hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin shows every second counts in the negotiations. Seven American citizens are still hostages of Hamas.
