Supervisors Continue To Discuss Paving Proposal

(Le Mars) –Plymouth County Board of Supervisors continued to discuss a paving
request during their weekly meeting Tuesday morning. The request is being made by
Neil Anthony of Anthony Trucking. At issue is a request to pave a portion of Lake
Avenue from county road C-38 heading south. The original request asked the county
to consider paving a stretch of the road extending 470 feet to the south. Plymouth
County Supervisors had said that Anthony would need to finance at least two-thirds
of the paving cost, which originally was estimated at over $100,000. Anthony
initially suggested he finance $30,000 of the original paving cost, but the
supervisors indicated Anthony would need to have more of an investment, since
Anthony was the primary benefactor to having the road paved. Anthony Trucking has
offered a counter proposal to the county to pave 250 feet. County engineer Tom
Rohe submitted a new estimate to the counter proposal which would be approximately
$68,770. Rohe says Anthony indicated if the county did not want to pave the road,
would the county, at the very least, be willing to widen the intersection so trucks
could turn more easily.

Rohe informed the county supervisors that Anthony indicated the intersection has
too much of a tight radius for turning trucks.

The county engineer explained to the supervisors what would be required if they
only wanted to widen the intersection, and not perform any paving.

Supervisor chairman Jim Henrich suggested the county perform the grading and widen
the intersection, and then wait to see if that would solve most of the problems.

Supervisor Mark Loutsch says he is opposed to the idea of paving the small stretch
of roadway, but he has concerns there may be additional problems with proper
drainage if the paving doesn’t include the original distance of 470 feet.

The supervisors again did not take any formal action on the issue, but Supervisor
Craig Anderson agreed to accompany Tom Rohe to meet with Anthony to see what
compromise may be reached.

In other action, the county supervisors approved the request by the Plymouth County
Secondary Roads Department to purchase new computerized survey equipment. County
engineer Tom Rohe informed the county board the total cost would be at $38,447.
However, he says Transit Works of Lincoln, Nebraska, the company that sells
professional survey equipment is offering a $5,000 rebate on the return of the
older survey equipment. Rohe says the company has indicated within a year or two,
the company would not be servicing the old survey equipment.

Town Hall Meeting Scheduled For Corn Growers On Litigation Case

(Le Mars) — MidwestCornLawsuit.com will be hosting an informational town hall
meeting in Le Mars, scheduled for Tuesday, July 5th. The attorney hosting the
meeting will cover the litigation against Syngenta Ag. All corn growers in the
area are being encouraged to attend. Back in 2009, Syngenta released a new strain
of corn seed into the United States market before receiving import approval from
China. Without import approval for this strain, known as Agrisure Viptera, China
rejected U-S corn shipments in 2013 and 2014, causing global collapse in U-S corn
prices. The export market disruptions with China cost U-S farmers billions of
dollars. All U-S corn growers, regardless of whether or not they planted Syngenta
seed, were impacted by this market disruption. In addition, to individual farmers,
landlords, grain elevators, transporters, and others in the supply chain may be
able to file a claim in order to be made whole by Syngenta. Over 45,000 corn
farmers across the United States have already filed suit, as have large
agricultural companies including Cargill and Archer Daniels Midland. The
informational town hall meeting will be held at the Pizza Ranch restaurant located
at 11 Central Avenue in Le Mars.
