Wood Grinder Catches On Fire

(Le Mars) — Early Saturday morning at about 2:35 a.m. the Le Mars Fire and Rescue
Department responded to a fire located south of Le Mars about two miles on county
road K-49. When fire officials arrived on the scene they noticed a wood grinder
was on fire. Apparently, a few logs had gotten warm and were left in the tub of
the wood grinder causing a fire to start. The fire ignited the conveyor belts on
the grinder. The wood grinder was fully engulfed in flames when fire fighters got
to the scene. The wood grinder was listed as a total loss. A nearby pile of
wood chippings had also caught on fire. Fire officials used a fire retardant foam
to help smother the flames. Fire officials were on the scene for more than two
hours.

Cedar Rapids Prepares For Flooding

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) – The Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control shelter is
providing a safe haven for pets as flooding looms.
The Des Moines Register (https://dmreg.co/2cPeEFL ) reports that officials
hope the offer of shelter will help persuade people to leave their flood-prone
homes. The officials say some people might remain in their homes because they
can’t find places to stay that will allow pets.
More than 50 pets have already been taken to the shelter for temporary
refuge.
The shelter also has compiled a list of hotels and other places that will
accept pets.
Shelter manager Diane Webber says the shelter handled more than 1,000 dogs,
cats and other stranded animals during the record 2008 flooding.
