SIOUX CITY, IA — J.D. Scholten, Democratic Candidate for Iowa’s 4th Congressional District trails Rep. Steve King by only six points in an internal poll released on Saturday. Former Virginia Governor To Visit Iowa This Week

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe is going to Iowa this week to try to get fellow Democrats fired up ahead of November’s elections.
The Washington Post reports that McAuliffe plans to visit Des Moines on Tuesday.
In a written statement, McAuliffe said Democrats can’t afford “to sit on the sidelines when the heart and soul of our country is on the line.”
Iowa, the first-in-the-nation caucus state, could play an important role for Democrats as they try to win back Midwestern states that helped Donald Trump win the White House in 2016.
The state has two highly competitive Congressional races and a
governor’s race that the nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates a “toss-up.”
McAuliffe, who left office in January, has been mentioned as a
possible 2020 presidential candidate.

Board of Regents To Ask Legislature For More Money, And Raise Tuition Rates

(Des Moines) — The Iowa Board of Regents will ask the governor and lawmakers for an additional 20 million dollars state funding during the next legislative session and also plan to make annual increases in tuition at the three state schools. Board president Michael Richards told the board at their meeting Thursday they have to start taking an overall view of the four areas that are used to fund the three state universities.

He says they have to find a way to use all the sources to provide the funding to maintain the quality of the three state universities.

Richards says the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa are doing their part in making the best use of their resources.

Richards says they will also have to ask students to pay more.

Richards says the amount of money they are asking for from the state is a fair amount.
