(LE MARS)–A priest in the Sioux City Diocese recommended the Gehlen Catholic class of 2010 to be thankful for anything they have ever received from anyone. Giving the commencement address at Gehlen Catholic, Reverend Richard Ries talked of times he was thankful in his life and urged students to send a note of thanks.

During commencement Sunday Le Mars Community senior Rebecca Ahlers challenged her classmates to make their individual impact something that will stand out for generations to come.

(LE MARS)–Fees for the next school year will be considered by the Le Mars Community School Board of Education tonight.
The agenda for the board’s meeting includes the fees, substitute teacher pay, and a contract for maintenance and custodial work.
The board is scheduled to close a portion of the meeting to the public for a hearing to suspend or expel a student. The board is expected to take action on the superintendent’s recommendation for the student in open session.
The public meeting is at the Education Service Center beginning at 7:30 tonight.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) The city of Norfolk has received a $505,000 federal grant to help one of its newest businesses, Milk Specialties Company.
The Illinois-based company will use most of the money to purchase the former Protient Products facility, which it has been leasing. The company has hired 22 employees, many of whom previously worked for Protient.
The company expects to create 15 additional full-time positions.
The total cost of the project is more than $10 million.
The food-solutions unit of Milk Specialties that the Norfolk facility is a part of produces customized protein ingredients used in sports nutrition, and food and drinks for weight loss.

UNDATED (AP) Iowa farmers enjoyed one of their best years in 2008, thanks to soaring corn and soybean prices.
Now, many growers are getting a second shot of cash for that year’s crops in the form of federal disaster payments even if they had minimal revenue losses.
Some farmers are getting as much as $100,000 each.
The total statewide, $163 million, is more than twice that of any other state so far.
Federal officials say the state’s total could top $300 million, which would be twice as much farm disaster aid as Iowa has received in the past 15 years combined.
Experts say that because of quirks in how the payments are calculated, some of the income losses that the disaster aid is supposed to cover existed largely on paper.
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) A 24-year-old Bettendorf woman has died after a car crash in Davenport that authorities say was likely fog-related.
Abby Lynn Vermeire was a passenger in a car driven by her fiance early Saturday when they were struck by a semitrailer on Interstate 80. Her fiance was hospitalized in fair condition.
The truck’s driver has been charged with making an unsafe turn. He wasn’t injured.
The accident was the first of two fatal crashes in Davenport over the weekend.
Davenport police say 37-year-old Donna Mitchell and her two daughters, 13-year-old Kourtni and 11-year-old Susan, died Saturday.
They were involved in a two-vehicle crash that left five other people injured.
The causes of the crashes are under investigation.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) About six years after work began, crews in Des Moines are nearing completion of a roughly $70 million transformation of the banks of the Des Moines River.
Work on the Principal Riverwalk began in 2004. The city has opened an outdoor ice skating rink, turned a dilapidated railroad bridge into a pedestrian span, built a garden next to the City Hall, created a new small park and linked riverfront paved trails to a regional trail system.
A couple of the most high-profile additions will be completed soon as the Center Street Bridge opens for pedestrians and bicyclists this summer. Work is under way on a plaza and building on Court Avenue with restrooms on the ground level and a cafe above, overlooking the river.
EAGLE GROVE, Iowa (AP) Funeral services have been set for a 19-year-old Iowa man who was killed during a fishing trip.
Visitation for Devin Resh of Webster City will be held Monday at the Foust Funeral Home in Goldfield.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove.
Police say Resh and three men were fishing at a pond when one of them hit him several times in the head with a hatchet. Farmers found his body Thursday morning.
The three men have been charged in connection with his death. Police haven’t released a possible motive.
Twenty-year-old Lucas Faulkner is charged with murder. Two Webster City residents, 17-year-old Tanner Douglas Jewsbury and 19-year Anthony Austen Simpson, are charged with being accessories after the fact.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) Cedar Rapids officials are upset that more than 100 flood-damaged homes and businesses remain untouched as the two-year anniversary of the record flood approaches.
Flood waters submerged about 10 square miles of the city in June 2008. More than 18,000 people were affected.
The mucky, moldy homes remain in disrepair even as neighbors have rebuilt next to them.
Mayor Ron Corbett and council member Don Karr say something needs to be done to deal with the flood-damaged buildings.
The city’s flood-recovery director, Greg Eyerly, says the city will use a new state law that makes it easier to identify and abate flood-related nuisances.
He says the city is in the process of buying out 100 commercial properties and about 1,300 homes.
