(SIOUX CITY) — Jordan Johnson, Bishop Heelan’s all-time wins leader, threw a five-hit shut out with nine strikeouts and no walks as number-three Bishop Heelan beat Le Mars 3-0 Monday night in the 3A Regional softball semifinals at the S-Y-A Complex. Emily Anderson had two hits for Le Mars and Erica Westhoff had a triple but Johnson, who improved to 30-and-3 for the season, slammed the door on each scoring opportunity. Jordan Heidebrink allowed six hits for Le Mars and struck out eight. She walked three and two of those base runners scored. Le Mars committed only one error on the night but that also scored a run. Shannon Reynolds and Makayla Augustine had two-out, RBI hits for the Crusaders. Le Mars ends the season at 25-and-11.
(AKRON) — Top-rated Akron-Westfield escaped an upset bid by unrated Remsen St. Mary’s with three runs in the top of the seventh inning Monday night to beat the Hawks 3-0 in the 1A Regional semifinals at Akron. Jordan Harris fired a three-hit shutout for the Westerners.

(REMSEN) — Both Remsen-Union and Remsen St. Mary’s incorporated the same formula to advance to the 1A District Tournament semifinals Tuesday night — a seventh inning rally! R-U came up with seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to stun Akron-Westfield 16-12, avenging two regular season losses to the Westerners. A-W built a seven-run lead after five innings and were threating a ten-run rule verdict before the Rockets scored eleven runs in the final two innings. Matt Hansen’s three-run double keyed the seventh inning rally and put the Rockets ahead to stay. Remsen-Union capped the turn-around with a double play in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal the deal. R-U takes a 7-and-18 record into the semifinals Thursday night while A-W ends the season at 18-and-11.
Remsen St. Mary’s scored three runs on a squeeze bunt and error to highlight a five-run seventh inning as the Hawks rallied from a 3-2 deficit to beat Gehlen 7-3 Tuesday night in the 1A District quarterfinals in Remsen. Tanner Kockler tied the game with a single and on the very next pitch, Beau Pick was hit with the bases loaded to force home the go-ahead run. Andrew Portz then laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score the third run of the inning with two more runners crossing the plate when the throw to first base sailed down the right field line. Tanner Kockler then retired Gehlen in order in the bottom of the seventh to nail down the victory. Kockler finished with a two-hitter with eleven strikeouts. He walked six and hit a batter. One of the Jays two hits was a two-run Texas-Leahue double into shallow right field by Zach Wurth that capped a three-run fifth inning rally by Gehlen that erased a 2-0 deficit. The Hawks advance to the District semifinals Thursday against Remsen-Union, sporting a 21-and-8 record while the Jays close out a 16-and-13 season.

(LE MARS) — Number-three rated Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley and number-two Sergeant Bluff-Luton were winners at the Bulldog Complex Friday night as the Class 3A District Tournament got under way.
BH/RV opened the semifinal doubleheader in Le Mars with a 7-3 win over Bishop Heelan. Basketball all-stater Marcus Heemstra got the pitching win and also homered for the Nighthawks. A.J. Staiert hit a three-run homer for Heelan.
In the second game of the evening, Sergeant Bluff-Luton survived a scare from Le Mars to win in eight innings 6-5. The Warriors went ahead 5-1 on a RBI double by Kendall Hazel, a two-run single by Jake Wimmer and a RBI single by Ross Chettinger. Another run scored on a Bulldog error. Le Mars chipped away at the defict over the final 3 1/2 innings of the game. Eric Havey’s two-run single in the fourth cut the deficit to 5-3 and Judd Herzberg’s double an inning later made it 5-4. The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out throwing error. S-B-L started their winning rally in the eighth with two out and no one on. Josh Peterson walked, Ross Chettinger singled and Andy Kollbaum drilled a single through the right side of the Bulldog infield to plate a runner from second base. Kendall Hazel retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth to earn the win in relief for the Warriors. Judd Herzberg worked all eight innings for Le Mars and took the loss. He finished with seven strikeouts. Le Mars finishes the season at 14-and-16.
