(ORANGE CITY) — Caroline Reinders scored 19 points and Jasmyn Calkhoven added 11 to lead Unity Christian to a season-opening 49-43 girls basketball win over Le Mars Tuesday night in Orange City. Le Mars rallied to take a 28-27 halftime lead, wiping out an eleven-point deficit with a 13-1 run over the final five minutes of the first half. Unity reclaimed a ten point advantage after halftime, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 15-4 in the first eleven minutes of the second half. Le Mars closed to within four points twice in the final forty seconds on three-point baskets by Carolyn Ahlers and Leah Clement but the Knights were able to hold on for the victory. Erica Westhoff led Le Mars with nine points.

(LE MARS) — Le Mars used a trap-press defense to ignite a 15-6 third quarter run that sent Le Mars to a 53-43 win over Rock Valley Friday night in the opening round of the Hy-Vee Holiday Tournament at Carey gym. Emily Anderson had a season-best 17 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs while Erica Westhoff added ten. Le Mars takes a 1-and-1 record into Saturday’s championship game against Sioux City East. East rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to beat Hinton 52-45 in the first game Friday. Melissa Mounts led a balanced East attack with nine points while Ashton Moody had 12 for Hinton and Morgan Mehrer 11. Hinton meets Rock Valley in the consolation game Saturday night.

(LE MARS) — Sioux City East used a trapping defense and a balanced scoring attack to beat Le Mars 58-40 Saturday night in the championship game of the Hy-Vee Holiday Tournament at Carey gym. East led most of the night, taking a 33-22 lead to the lockerroom at halftime. Le Mars trimmed a 14-point deficit to six at 46-40 with 1:30 to play, thanks to Emily Anderson’s three-point play and three-point basket. East then finished the game on a 12-0 run to pull away. Anderson led Le Mars with 13 points while Erica Westhoff added ten. Melissa Mounts led East with 12 while Payton Pry chipped in with ten for the winners.
The Hinton girls claimed third place with a 69-30 romp over Rock Valley. The Blackhawks led 34-5 after one quarter. Ashton Moody scored 22 points with teammate Mallory Thoreson adding 20 for the Blackhawks.
Ashton Moody of Hinton, Alex Schuett of Le Mars, Joanna Heemstra of Rock Valley and East High’s Melissa Mounts and Emily Keilman were named to the all-tournament team.
