Brunsville business burglary arrest made
(LE MARS)–A Marcus man is charged with theft from a Brunsville business.
The Plymouth County Sheriff’s office arrested 50-year-old Nicholas Mitchell.
Mitchell was arrested December 31st after the sheriff’s office investigated the theft of money from the Corner Cafe in Brunsville. The money was taken on November 30th of last year.
Mitchell was booked into the Plymouth County Jail and has been released on bond.
Police issue new alert about bank card scam
(SIOUX CITY) A scam involving financial records is being investigated by Sioux City Police.
Police have received several reports of people being called by someone claiming to be with the person’s bank. The caller asks for verification of information claiming there is a problem with their debit card.
Sioux City Police Sergeant Jeremy McClure cautions this is a scam to obtain the victim’s information and bank account numbers.
Police in Sioux City ask that bank customers hang up on those callers and emphasize that personal information should not be revealed.
If someone is a victim of this debit or credit card scam , they’re asked to contact their bank immediately, file a police report and contact the three major credit reporting agencies to place a fraud alert on their credit report.
Iowa taking steps to minimize damage from beetles
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) As ash tree-killing beetles consolidate their toehold in northeast Iowa’s Allamakee County, cities and park managers elsewhere in the state are taking steps to thwart the insects’ spread.
Young, damaged or ailing ash trees are among the first casualties. They’ll be replaced by a hardier species mix.
Already, ash trees are been removed in Des Moines, at Iowa State University in Ames and at Saylorville Lake campgrounds.
Cedar Rapids is planning to remove 300 trees over the next three months.
That’s an expensive tactic when it costs an average $1,500 to remove a tree.
Larvae of the emerald ash borer beetle drill into ash trees, eat through vascular tissue and stop the flow of water. An infested tree can die within a few years.
Branstad names head of banking division
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Gov.-elect Terry Branstad has named Jim Schipper as superintendent of the Iowa Division of Banking, which works to ensure all laws and regulations are followed.
Branstad announced Schipper’s appointment on Wednesday.
Schipper, a native of Osceola, has been active in the Iowa Bankers Association for 20 years.
He is a graduate of Iowa State University with a degree in Ag Business.
Schipper and his wife, Elaine, live in Osceola.
Iowa patient shot himself despite negotiations
MARION, Iowa (AP) Authorities have released the name of a patient at a Marion care center who shot himself after a two-hour standoff with deputies.
The Linn County sheriff’s office says 63-year-old William Null, of Marion, died Wednesday morning, about six hours after he shot himself at the Abbe Center for Community Care.
The standoff began about 11 p.m. Tuesday after center officials called to report an armed patient.
Sheriff Brian Gardner says Null had returned to the facility from a pass allowing him to leave. He says Null went outside and shot himself about 1:30 a.m.
The center provides services to people who are unable to live on their own because of age, illnesses or developmental problems. Abbe CEO Dan Strellner declined to comment.
NY-based firm closes Des Moines dental office
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) The collapse of a New York-based dental company has left some Iowans without their money, dental records and, in some cases, dentures.
Allcare Dental Dentures in Des Moines was closed for business on Wednesday.
The Des Moines Register says the Buffalo, N.Y.-based company had sent a fax to the Iowa Dental Board. The company said it had run out of money and was going out of business.
A company website, www.allcareinfo.com , says Allcare “is still continuing to work day and night to transfer patient records and unfinished dental work” to dentists near the closed Allcare locations.
Emergency Dental Care in Clive says it would be getting records from Allcare’s Des Moines office and would do the work people had already paid for to Allcare.
Train car pins Omaha man near Council Bluffs, Iowa
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) Iowa authorities say an Omaha man was pinned by a train car at a power plant south of Council Bluffs.
Pottawattamie County sheriff’s Sgt. Duane Richie told radio station KJAN in Atlantic that 28-year-old Michael McGillen Jr. was taken to an Omaha hospital. His condition isn’t available yet.
Richie says the accident occurred around 3 a.m. Thursday.
Lewis Township Rescue workers freed McGillen so he could be treated.
The Iowa Interstate Railroad is investigating. Richie says McGillen works for the railroad.
A railroad spokesman did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press.
Ex-Hawkeye files written appearance on drug charge
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Former Iowa running back Adam Robinson has filed a written appearance on a misdemeanor drug charge.
The Des Moines Register says Robinson filed the paperwork on Wednesday in lieu of a formal appearance in Polk County District Court. Initial appearances are used to inform suspects about charges against them, their rights and to set bail if they are in custody.
The 21-year-old Robinson was charged with possession of marijuana on Dec. 27 in his hometown of Des Moines. The Iowa State Patrol says he was a passenger in a car pulled over for not having a front license plate.
Robinson was suspended for Iowa’s win over Missouri in the Insight Bowl for failing to comply with team policies. He was dismissed from the team on Monday.
Iowa rallies from 13-down to beat Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Kachine Alexander scored 20 points and No. 21 Iowa rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit to beat Minnesota 63-57 on Wednesday night.
Iowa (13-3, 1-2 Big Ten) missed 13 of 14 shots late in the first half and trailed 38-25 when the comeback started. Kalli Hansen hit a 3-pointer to tie the score 53-53, then hit two free throws to put the Hawkeyes ahead for good.
Hansen also stole the ball with 11 seconds left with the Gophers setting up for a potential game-tying basket.
The victory ended a two-game skid for Iowa.
It was the second straight game that the Gophers squandered a second-half lead. They blew a ten-point advantage in an overtime loss to Indiana on Sunday and have lost their first three games of the Big Ten season.
Leah Cotton led Minnesota (8-8, 0-3) with 18 points.
