(SIOUX FALLS)–Snowfall between five and eight inches can be expected in Siouxland.
The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from noon today (Sunday) until six Monday night.
Steady and persistent snowfall will develop this afternoon continuing into Monday before tapering off Monday evening.
Winds will be relatively light, in the 10 to 15 mph an hour range during the snowfall. Forecasters don’t expect significant blowing or drifting of snow.
A winter weather advisory has been issued because the snow is expected to cause travel difficulties such as snow covered roads and limited visibilities.
Larchwood woman’s car involved in rollover near Larchwood
(LARCHWOOD)–A Larchwood woman was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital after her car rolled northwest of Larchwood Friday morning.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports 54-year-old Rachel Folkens was driving north on Highway nine. Due to slippery road conditions, the sheriff’s office said Folkens lost conrol and the car went into the ditch where it rolled.
She was taken to Sanford in Sioux Falls by the Lyon County Ambulance.
The accident happened around eight Friday morning.
Cookies are tasty teaching tool for girls
(SIOUX CITY)–A tasty treat will help girls raise money for their group and learn new skills.
The 2011 Girl Scout cookie sale by Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa features eight cookie varieties for this year. The new treat is Shout Outs which are Belgian -Style caramelized cookies.
Girl Scouts sold more than one-point-four-million boxes of cookies last year. There are regional flavor favorites. The Sioux City region prefers the Peanut Butter Patties, but the best seller overall in Iowa is the Thin Mint.
Sales began Saturday and continue through January 31st. Nationwide, more than 700-million dollars is raised for girls and communities through the cookie sales.
According to Karen Grode of the Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa, more than 75 percent of the money raised through cookie sales stays in the region to help with programming and activities for girls.
Rawhide bull riders compete in Sioux City January 21-22
(SIOUX CITY)–Is it the longest or the shortest eight-second ride?
Those who brave the bulls in Sioux City for the Rawhide Bull Riding Challenge provide two days of entertainment this month.
Promoters say the best bulls in the business will take over the Gateway Arena in the Tyson Events Center challenging anyone tough enough to tackle the eight-second ride.
The event begins at 7:30 in the evening January 21st and January 22nd.
Iowa lawmakers will tackle redistricting
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Drawing new legislative and congressional district lines won’t be easy and it won’t come quickly.
Iowa takes an unusual approach to remove politics from the redrawing of district lines to match population changes shown by the U.S. Census.
In Iowa, nonpartisan legislative staffers redraw the lines, trying to make districts nearly equal in population and as compact as possible.
The plan is presented to the Legislature, which will meet beginning Monday. Lawmakers can only accept or reject the plan. If it’s rejected, the process is repeated.
If that plan is rejected, a third is prepared and can be altered. Since the system was established in 1980, the Legislature hasn’t demanded a third plan.
Lawmakers may have to return for a special session to approve the plan this spring.
Iowa GOP chairman wins second term leading party
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) The Iowa Republican Party’s current leader has won a second term.
Chairman Matt Strawn didn’t face any challengers in his re-election bid. The party’s State Central Committee agreed to retain Strawn on Saturday. This will be the first time in eight years that an Iowa GOP chairman served more than one term.
Strawn says he wants to build on the GOP’s success in the November elections. No incumbent Republican lost at the congressional, statewide or legislative level in Iowa in November.
Strawn says he will focus on preparing for the straw poll, debates and caucuses that may help determine the country’s next president in 2012.
Strawn first became the Republican Party’s chairman in 2009. He is also the co-owner of the Iowa Barnstormers arena football team.
Police: Iowa City woman stabbed girlfriend in back
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) Police say an Iowa City woman stabbed her girlfriend in the back as she tried to move out of an apartment the two shared.
Police told the Iowa City Press Citizen they arrested the 31-year-old woman Thursday on suspicion of domestic assault.
Police say the victim had been living with the suspect off-and-on for several months, but the victim was trying to move out when she was attacked Thursday.
Police said the 31-year-old picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed the victim in the back and sliced her hand. The victim’s injuries were treated at a local hospital and she was released.
Iowa man leads Wis. authorities on 130-mph chase
JAMESTOWN TOWNSHIP, Wis. (AP) Authorities in southwest Wisconsin say an Iowa teen is in custody after a vehicle pursuit that reached speeds of 130 miles-per-hour.
The Grant County sheriff’s department says deputies tried to stop the 19-year-old Dubuque man Friday night for speeding and driving on the wrong side of the center line.
They say the teen sped up and turned onto Highway 151. As he fled into Iowa, Wisconsin deputies contacted Dubuque authorities.
Deputies say the driver tried to shake his pursuers by exiting the highway and driving through downtown Dubuque. Then he returned to the highway, where authorities had set down stop sticks.
The teen drove over the stop sticks, disabling his car. He eventually pulled over and was taken into custody without incident.
A 17-year-old girl was also in the car.
Iowa police seek suspects in credit card theft
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) West Des Moines police are searching for two women who went on a shopping spree with a stolen credit card and spent nearly $9,000.
Police say the credit card was stolen from a person at a restaurant in West Des Moines on Dec. 1. Lt. Jim Barrett says the suspects went shopping and charged $8,768 at five stores within hours.
Police on Friday say they have surveillance photographs of the suspects, and are asking for the public’s help in identifying them.
Gable to appear on home makeover show
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) Former Iowa wrestling coach Dan Gable will appear on an episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” on ABC.
The show features home renovations for needy families. Gable will appear during Sunday night’s episode.
Gable coached at Iowa from 1977-97. He coach 152 All-Americans, 45 national champions and won nine straight NCAA championships from 1978-86.
Gable was also a star wrestler for Iowa State, where he finished his career 118-1, and won a gold medal at the 1972 Olympics.
Cedar Rapids uses invention to scare birds
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) Cedar Rapids is putting up “crow coffins” again to scare away thousands of the giant, black birds converging on a downtown park this winter.
The Gazette says former city veterinarian Russell Anthony came up with the idea to move the crows and the droppings they leave behind a few years ago. And it apparently works.
The crow coffin is a board with two dead crows on it. The side of the board with the dead crows is visible from the sky, not the ground.
The city has used them before in Greene Square Park. Now, the crows have returned, and the city is putting the devices back in the trees.
Park Superintendent Daniel Gibbins says it’s different, but it seems to work.
