(REMSEN) — The Remsen St. Mary’s girls went on a 6-2 surge in the final 40 seconds of the game to rally from a 37-36 deficit to a 42-39 win over the Gehlen Catholic girls Wednesday night in Remsen. The win avenged two losses this season to the Lady Jays and snapped a 12-game losing streak in the series. Paige Harpenau’s lone basketball with 40 seconds to play lifted the Hawks to a 38-37 lead and moments later Brielle Biezuns hit a break away layup for a three point lead. Gehlen’s Amber Timmins cut the Hawks lead to 40-39 with a drive-in layup with nine seconds to play. Makenzie Ricke completed the scoring with a pair of free throws with 4.4 seconds to play for St. Mary’s to secure the victory. The Hawks improve to 9-and-5 while Gehlen falls to 7-and-4. Biezuns led R-S-M with 13 points while Miranda Staab added 10. Timmins had 14 for Gehlen to lead all scorers.
The Gehlen boys improved to 8-and-3 with a 42-25 win over St. Mary’s Wednesday night. The Jays scored the first eight points of the game and never looked back. Trevor Bouma had eleven points and Eric Loutsch ten for Gehlen while St. Mary’s got eight from Beau Pick. The 25 points was the second fewest points given up by Gehlen this season. The Jays have now won 12-of-the-last 13 against St. Mary’s in the series.
Gehlen hosts Remsen-Union Friday.

(LE MARS) — Number-seven Sergeant Bluff-Luton took control of the fourth quarter to pull away from the Le Mars girls 44-31 Thursday night at Carey gym in a makeup game from Monday’s postponment schedule. The Warrior led 26-24 with three minutes left in the third quarter before finishing the game on an 18-7 run to improve to 8-and-1 for the season. The Lady Bulldogs fall to 4-and-6. Emily Anderson led Le Mars with seven points.
The Le Mars boys improved to 3-and-0 since the holiday break as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter and rolled to an 86-66 romp over Sergeant Bluff-Luton Thursday. Austin Homan had a career-high 30 points for Le Mars and Jordan Eisma topped his previous best with 18. Paxton Strub added 14. The Bulldogs are now 7-and-2 for the season.

(LE MARS) — Le Mars split their Lakes Conference doubleheader with Estherville/Lincoln Central Friday night. E-L-C won the girls game 60-39 while Le Mars took the boys game 69-33. In the girls game, The Midgettes overcame a 5-for-27 first half shooting performance to hit 61% of their second half shots and score 46 points as E-L-C rallied from a 17-14 deficit at the halftime break to beat Le Mars by 21 points. The Lakes Conference leaders went to 7-and-0 in the league with the win. Alyssa Johnson had 19 to lead all scorers. Erica Westhoff led Le Mars with ten. The Lady Bulldogs fall to 4-and-7 for the season and 3-and-4 in the Lakes Conference. In the boys game, Le Mars erupted for 28 points in the first quarter and shot 62% in the first half in building a 51-24 lead by intermission. The clock was in continous mode by midway through the third quarter as Le Mars improved to 8-and-2 for the season and 6-and-1 in the Lakes Conference. Paxton Strub led the scoring with 19 points while Austin Homan and Jordan Eisma added 18 apiece. Le Mars remains tied for the league lead with Western Christian and Emmetsburg. Le Mars closes out their homestand Monday with a makeup twinbill against Sioux City West before returning to conference play Tuesday at Storm Lake.
(LE MARS) — The Gehlen boys earned a big War Eagle Conference win Friday night, beating Remsen-Union 45-40 at the Gehlen gym. Trevor Bouma connected for 20 points for the Jays and Kraig Alesch had 21 for the Rockets. The game was tight throughout the night with Gehlen leading 23-20 at halftime and 33-30 after three quarters. The Jays improve to 9-and-3 for the season and 5-and-1 in league play. The Rockets fall to 4-and-2 in the W-E-C. In the girls game, Gehlen broke away from an upset-minded Remsen-Union squad in the second half to win 59-53. The Rockets and Lady Jays were tied at 29-all at halftime. Amber Timmins had another big night for Gehlen, scoring 28 points. Brittany Weikel had 12 and Jen Ruba ten for R-U. The Lady Jays improve to 8-and-4 for the season and 5-and-1 in the W-E-C. Gehlen hosts Hinton Tuesday in a non-league doubleheader.
SATURDAY RESULTS – January 15

Sioux City North claimed the team title at the Le Mars Invitational Saturday with Sergeant Bluff-Luton finishing second and Sheldon/South O’Brien third. Le Mars took fifth and Hinton rounded out the ten-team field with a tenth place finish. Le Mars had no champions on Saturday but Mason Cook at 119 pounds, Quinton Vore at 135 pounds and Chris Stevenson at heavyweight took second. Cook was pinned in his championship match while Vore lost 7-5 in sudden death overtime. His opponent got a take down with one second left in regulation to tie the score at 5-all and then won it with another take down in O.T. Stevenson lost 3-2 to defending state champion Brendan TerWee of West Lyon. TerWee had pinned Stevenson in December at the Spencer Tournament. C.J. Singer and Zach Reed were third for Le Mars. Hinton got a second place finish out of Kole Vondrak at 160 pounds.
