(LE MARS) — Austin Homan and Paxton Strub combined for 40 points to lead Le Mars to a 63-52 win over Emmetsburg at Carey gym Tuesday night. Homan had 21 points and Strub 19 for the Bulldogs with Judd Herzberg adding another ten points to the winning cause. 6’10” Nick Wuebker had 22 points for the Emmetsburg. Emmetsburg led 24-23 at halftime. The win avenged the Bulldogs lone Lakes Conference loss and drops the E-Hawks out of a share of the league lead. The match-up on Friday in Hull with top-rated Western Christian will be for the Lakes Conference title in all likely hood. The Bulldogs have now won eight straight and take a 12-and-2 record into the Friday night date with the Wolfpack. Le Mars is 9-and-1 in conference play.
In the girls game, Emmetsburg avenged a December loss to Le Mars with a 47-43 overtime victory at Carey gym. Erica Westhoff hit a three-point basketball at the end of regulation for Le Mars to force overtime but the E-Hawks prevailed in the extra session. Paige Naig had 22 points for Emmetsburg while Leah Clement paced Le Mars with 11. Le Mars went 6-of-16 on the free throw line while Emmetsburg was 20-of-33. The loss drops Le Mars to 6-and-10 for the season and 4-and-6 in Lakes Conference play.
(REMSEN) — The Remsen-Union Rockets rallied from a 14-point first half deficit to beat the Gehlen boys 69-64 Tuesday night in Remsen in a non-league match-up of War Eagle Confernce rivals. Cam Kuchel scored 13 of his game-high 17 points in the third quarter when R-U surged from being down by two at halftime to an eleven-point lead. Kraig Alesch had 12 for the Rockets, including seven in the fourth quarter as the Rockets held off a determined rally by the Jays that cut the Rocket lead to three with 23 seconds to play on a Michael Whitehead three-pointer. Jacob Fiedler and Alex Hansen had 11 and 10 points respectively to complete the Rockets’ double figure scoring. Trevor Bouma led Gehlen with 16 while Michael Whitehead added 12 and Taylor Wurth 11. The two teams split their regular season home-and-home series with both game being decided by five points. Gehlen falls to 11-and-4 for the season while the Rockets improve to 11-and-5.
In the girls game, Gehlen outscored Remsen-Union 14-2 in the third quarter to break the game open and the Lady Jays went onto post a 53-36 victory over the 1-and-15 Rockets. Steph Rohe had 14 points for Gehlen while Katelin Langel added 10. Brittany Sudtelgte had nine for R-U. Gehlen improves to 10-and-5 with the win.
Gehlen travels to South O’Brien Friday night while Remsen-Union hosts Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn as both return to War Eagle Conference action.

Le Mars finished sixth out of an eight-team field at the Lakes Conference meet in Spencer. Spencer topped the field with 257 1/2 points with Spirit Lake finishing second, Estherville/Lincoln Central third, Emmetsburg fourth, Storm Lake fifth, then Le Mars with 111 points and Western Christian and Cherokee brought up the rear. The Bulldogs did have two conference champions … Zach Reed at 145 pounds and Chris Stevenson at 285 pounds. Mason Cook (119#), Quinton Vore (135#) and Skyler Gries (140#) all finished in third place. C.J. Singer (125#) was fourth.

(HULL) — Defending 2A State Champ Western Christian took over sole possession of the Lakes Conference lead with a hard fought 58-47 win over the Le Mars Bulldogs Friday night in Hull. The Wolfpack scored the first four points of the second half to break a 27-all halftime tie and Western never trailed after that, holding Le Mars to six points in the third quarter for a 40-33 lead going into the fourth quarter. The lead increased to eleven in the first minute-and-a-half of the fourth quarter and never slipped to fewer than eight after that. The win avenges Western’s lone loss this season and improves their record to 15-and-1 for the season and 10-and-1 in the league. Le Mars falls to 12-and-3 with a 9-and-2 mark in the Lakes Conference. The loss halts an eight-game winning streak for the Bulldogs. Senior all-stater, Trevor Wolterstorff had 21 points to lead Western Christian while Le Mars got 14 points from Paxton Strub and 12 from Austin Homan. Le Mars travels to Sheldon Saturday night while Western Christian takes on top-rated Bishop Heelan in Sioux City Saturday night in a battle of two top-rated clubs and two defending State Champions.
In the girls game Friday, Western Christian reeled off a 17-0 run midway through the second half to extend a ten-point lead to a 27-point cushion enroute to a 72-48 win over Le Mars. The win was the tenth straight in the series for the Wolfpack. Kayla Gesink had 17 points for Western, Brook Wolterstorff 12 and Elissa Jansma 10. Emily Anderson led Le Mars with 16. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Lady Bulldogs and drops their record to 6-and-11 for the season and 4-and-7 in the Lakes Conference. Western Christian also won the JV girls game by 19 to hand the Le Mars JV girls their first loss of the season, dropping their record to 15-and-1. The Lady Bulldogs will also play at Sheldon Saturday night.
(PAULLINA) — South O’Brien drilled 13 three-point field goals and held on to first place in the War Eagle Conference Friday night with a 62-58 win over Gehlen Catholic in Paullina. Chas Biery hit six of the three-point buckets for the Wolverines and finished with 25 points. Adam Paulsen added 24 points and connected on four three’s. Gehlen’s Trevor Bouma hit five three-pointers and finished with 19 for the Jays. Michael Whitehead added 17 points and he connected on one three-pointer. All-in-all there were 19 three-pointers between the two teams. The Jays fall to 11-and-5 for the season and 6-and-2 in the W-E-C. South O’Brien is 7-and-0 in the league. The two play in Le Mars next month in a non-league match-up.
The Gehlen girls held South O’Brien to eight first half points and overwhelmed the Wolverines 56-22 in War Eagle play Friday night. The Lady Jays led 28-8 at the half. Steph Rohe and Amber Timmins had 13 points each for Gehlen and Emily Holtgrewe added ten. Gehlen is now 11-and-5 for the season and 7-and-1 in the War Eagle Conference.
Gehlen travels to Granville Tuesday to play Spalding Catholic for the third time this season.

(SHELDON) — The coaches call it the ‘carry over effect’! Sometimes it can have positive results but often times it comes up with negative results. For the second time this season the Le Mars boys basketball team has lost the game following the Western Christian match-up. The Bulldogs lost to Bishop Heelan by 21 points back in December fours days after up-setting Western Christian 55-52. Saturday night Le Mars lost 61-50 at Sheldon one night after seeing their eight-game winning streak and a share of first place in the Lakes Conference disappear in a 58-47 loss at Hull to the Wolfpack. Dallas Ennema and Josh Van Kekerix scored 17 points apiece for Sheldon and Jordan Dykstra added 14 more as the Orabs rallied from a 12-4 deficit in the first quarter to a 34-33 lead by halftime. Sheldon extened the advantage to 46-37 after three quarters and never were headed after that. For Le Mars, Austin Homan led the way with 14 points, Paxton Strub had 12 and Jordan Eisma 11. The loss marks the first back-to-back losses for the Bulldogs this season and drops their record to 12-and-4.
In the girls game, Michelle Fischer led Sheldon with 18 points to carry the Orabs to a 48-36 victory over Le Mars. Emily Anderson had 14 for the Lady Bulldogs who suffered their fifth straight loss and dropped to 6-and-12 for the season.
