Richard Schultz of Le Mars has gotten to know the personalities of over 200 of bikes in his lifetime. From mini motorized versions to art deco bikes from the 1940’s, an exotic Henderson Special to classic Harleys, one of them with all original parts and paint.
His collection of bikes is now down to 40, and he will be displaying a handful of those at the Le Mars Antique Show and Separate Flea Market this weekend. You’ll see a Doodlebug, a Whizzer, and a Cushman Airborne- which is a WW II scooter that was pushed out of an airplane with a parachute attached. He’ll also have a special Honda, and my personal favorite, a 1941 Harley race model, painted “cruiser” green.
Schultz says he’s been interested in motors and tinkering with them since he was born. He continues to impeccably restore 2 to 3 bikes each year and says he loves the process.

A complete restoration takes about 500 man hours to complete.
From Mount St. Helen’s to the Finger Lakes of New York, Rich and his wife, Jane, ride the bikes that he restores across the country.

Someone that he met through restoring and selling motorcycles has even forged a friendship across the ocean. Schultz went to New Zealand 2 years ago and spent 3 weeks discovering a new country on the back of a motorcycle.
Again, 5 of Schultz’s classically restored bikes will be on display at the Le Mars Area Chamber of Commerce Spring Fever Antique show this weekend. It takes place at the Le Mars Convention Center Friday 6-9, Saturday 9 to 5 and Sunday 10 to 4. (News report and photos by Angela Drake of KLEM News)
(LE MARS)–A new business will open in southwest Le Mars next month.
Jay Morton of Taco Bell expects the quick service restaurant on Silent Prairie Road to open in about mid-May.
Job applications will be accepted at the Le Mars business location next week.
Taco Bell has restaurants at about 56-hundred locations.
The Le Mars restaurant is one of two food businesses opening in a retail area developed by Staab Management of Grand Island, Nebraska.The firm relocated the Pizza Hut in Le Mars as the first restaurant in the new development.
Space is also leased to Mike Crank State Farm Insurance.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) A South Dakota man suspected of trying to rob a bank in northwest Iowa is in custody after a collision with an Iowa State Patrol car in Sioux City.
A man tried to rob a bank in Lawton Wednesday morning when an employee arrived to open the bank. Officials say the man, who showed a weapon, was scared off by a customer using the drive-thru.
Authorities say the man drove to Sioux City, where he was spotted by a Woodbury County sheriff’s deputy. He drove the wrong way down a street and was hit head-on by the patrol car.
Officials say Karlis Baisden, of Vermillion, South Dakota, is charged with first-degree robbery. He’s in jail on $32,000 bond.

DAKOTA CITY, Neb. (AP) A South Sioux City man charged in the death of a 2-month-old girl is expected to change his plea.
Court documents show a plea-taking hearing is scheduled for Lorenzo Guzman on April 11 in Dakota County District Court.
Guzman was originally charged with child abuse resulting in death. The charge was amended to manslaughter in January.
The child, Abrieana Rena Mace, died last August. An autopsy showed she died of asphyxiation after rolling over and lying face down in a recliner. Police says she was propped up in the chair and wasn’t checked for hours.
The child’s mother, Nicole Ramirez, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of child abuse last month.

WAVERLY, Iowa (AP) An Iowa man accused of killing a friend with a hatchet says in a police interview that he struggled with mental issues for years and felt that something dark took over when he attacked his friend while they were fishing at an old gravel pit.
Lucas Faulkner, of Eagle Grove, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Devin Resh, of Webster City, last May.
Faulkner’s trial, which was moved to Bremer County, began Monday. The Messenger of Fort Dodge says the jury on Wednesday heard Faulkner’s interview with police, where he admitted hitting Resh several times.
Faulkner says he struggled with mental issues and was afraid to seek help out of fear of being placed in a mental institution. He says he used several prescription drugs and marijuana.
DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) Dubuque County authorities say an inmate who escaped from the county jail after ducking out a fire exit door has been captured.
The sheriff’s office says 25-year-old Jeffrey Hess was working in the kitchen when he fled about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. The Telegraph Herald says he was taken into custody without incident Wednesday afternoon in Dubuque.
Hess, who faces a new charge of escape, was taken back to the jail. He was serving a 180-day sentence for domestic assault and violation of probation.
SIGOURNEY, Iowa (AP) Funeral services will be on Saturday for a Keokuk County sheriff’s deputy who was shot to death allegedly by a man with a history of mental illness who was later killed by officers after a standoff near Sigourney (SIG’-or-nee) in southeast Iowa.
Harden Funeral Home in What Cheer says services for Eric Stein will be at 1 p.m. at Sigourney High School.
The 39-year-old deputy from What Cheer was killed Monday when he and two other officers went to 53-year-old Jeffrey Krier’s (KREER) home. Authorities say Krier opened fire, killing Stein. Krier was killed after a standoff. The other officers weren’t injured.
Jessica Lown of the Iowa Department of Public Safety says Wednesday that an autopsy found Stein died of a shotgun wound to the head.
Branstad signs drunken boating bill into law
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Gov. Terry Branstad has signed into law a measure setting the same blood-alcohol limits for boaters who consume alcohol as those for motorists on the state’s highways.
Under the measure signed by Branstad Wednesday, a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent could bring a conviction, down from the 0.10 of a percent that was previously allowed.
The Legislature lowered the blood-alcohol level for motorists several years ago, and took the same step for boaters this year.
The requirement will apply to both power boats and sailboats, and on rivers, streams and lakes in the state.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is suing a Texas company that employed 31 mentally disabled men at an Iowa turkey processor, claiming the company severely abused and discriminated against the men for more than 20 years.
The agency field the lawsuit against Hill Country Farms Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Davenport, Iowa.
The company also did business as Henry’s Turkey Service, which provided the workers to West Liberty Foods. The lawsuit claims the Henry’s Turkey Service denied the workers lawful wages, subjected them to verbal and physical harassment and required them to live in a dilapidated bunkhouse in Atalissa, Iowa, and denied them medical care.
The agency is seeking lost wages for the workers and punitive and other damages.
Telephone messages left for company representatives were not immediately returned.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) A staffer for Republican Tim Pawlenty’s presidential exploratory committee has been arrested for public intoxication and trespassing at an Iowa home.
Eric Woolson, a consultant for the former Minnesota governor, says 24-year-old Ben Foster was arrested about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. Police were called after Foster was reported to be banging on the door of a home in the Des Moines suburb of Ankeny.
Police say Foster was looking for a friend’s home where he’d been staying.
Foster was taken to the Polk County jail and later released on $600 bond.
Woolson says Pawlenty expressed disappointment in the incident and that Foster has been placed on a two-week unpaid suspension.
Foster, 2009 University of Alabama graduate, issued a statement apologizing for his actions and acknowledging he made a very serious mistake.
