Elderly driver killed in Iowa collision with semi
CORNING, Iowa (AP) – An elderly man has died in a collision with
a semi south of Corning.
The Iowa State Patrol identified the victim of Friday evening’s
crash as 91-year-old Harold Muschamp of Corning.
The patrol says Muschamp was at a stop sign and pulled out in
front of the semi driven by 64-year-old Billie McCaughey, of Milan,
Mo. Muschamp died at the scene. McCaughey was not injured.
Overnight storm sparks fires in north-central Iowa

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) – An overnight storm has downed power lines
and trees and may have sparked fires in north-central Iowa.
A fire official told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier
(https://bit.ly/ntalDM ) that a lightning strike just before 2 a.m.
Saturday sparked a building fire in Cedar Falls. Two tree fires
were reported during the storm in Waterloo, where a transformer
also caught fire.
Waterloo police Sgt. Aaron McClelland says there is storm
damage, including downed trees and power lines, on the city’s west
and south sides.
Palin has harsh words for Obama to tea party crowd
INDIANOLA, Iowa (AP) – Cheers of “Run Sarah, Run” greeted
Sarah Palin at a tea party rally in Iowa, but the former Alaska
governor still isn’t saying whether she’s going to jump into the
2012 presidential race.
Palin did have harsh words Saturday for President Barack Obama
and the direction that she says the country has taken in his first
term.
She told the crowd in Indianola, Iowa that “America is
hurting” and at “a tipping point” due to “failed policies and
incompetent leadership.”
The 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee says the crisis runs
deeper than the fear of double-dip recession or “the shame of a
credit downgrade.”
She says this crisis “will relentlessly rage until we do
restore all that is free and good and right about America.”
Perry tells NH no to border fence
MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – Republican presidential candidate Rick
Perry says he opposes a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico.
Speaking to hundreds of New Hampshire voters at a private
reception Saturday afternoon, the Texas governor says a fence would
be ineffective and take too long to build.
The comments, which produced one angry shout, expose a rift with
some conservative voters over Perry’s immigration record. Tea party
activists in Texas have been particularly upset by his steady
opposition to the fence. He also signed a law giving illegal
immigrants in-state tuition for Texas universities.
Perry’s in-state rival Congressman Ron Paul told the Associated
Press yesterday that the more GOP voters learn about Perry, the
more his support will slip.
Perry entered the presidential contest three weeks ago and has
already surged to the lead in national polls. Saturday’s visit was
Perry’s third to New Hampshire so far.
Iowa man gets 20-year sentence in methadone death
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) – A Davenport man has been sentenced to 20
years in prison in the drug-related death of a Pleasant Valley
teen.
The U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Iowa says
30-year-old Colby Josvanger previously pleaded guilty to
distribution of methadone resulting in death. He was sentenced
Friday in federal court.
Prosecutors say Josvanger and Johnathen Anderson, of Bettendorf,
gave methadone to 18-year-old Zachary Sullivan in February 2009. A
day later, emergency personnel found Sullivan unresponsive in a
Pleasant Valley home. An autopsy attributed Sullivan’s death to the
consumption of several drugs. One of them was methadone.
Anderson has also pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing.
Iowa RB McCall likely out for season
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa freshman running back Mika’il McCall
will miss the rest of the season after breaking his ankle in
Saturday’s 34-7 win over Tennessee Tech.
McCall made his debut in the first quarter and rushed for a
team-high 61 yards on nine carries before hurting his ankle.
McCall, the son of former heavyweight boxing champion Oliver
McCall, is a 6-foot, 215-pound freshman from Dolton, Ill.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said after the game that McCall, who’d
seemingly won the backup job behind starter Marcus Coker, had
played very well and commended McCall for his attitude and spirit.
McCall will likely apply for a redshirt so he won’t use up a
year of eligibility.
Band of storms delays football games in Midwest
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) – A band of storms have caused delays at
college football games throughout the Midwest.
Fans were asked to evacuate Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend,
Ind., on Saturday at halftime against South Florida because of
lightning. Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa, also was cleared
during the Hawkeyes 34-7 win over Tennessee Tech.
Fans at Michigan Stadium were encouraged to leave the stadium
during a heavy downpour with strong winds and lightning, but it was
not evacuated. Tens of thousands of fans in Ann Arbor waited out
the weather as the Big House was mostly full when the game resumed
about 30 minutes later.
Martinez leads No. 10 Huskers’ 40-7 win over Mocs
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Taylor Martinez ran for 135 yards and three
touchdowns out of Nebraska’s new no-huddle offense and the No. 10
Cornhuskers beat Chattanooga 40-7 Saturday in their first game as
Big Ten members.
Rex Burkhead added 75 yards and a touchdown as the Cornhuskers
won their 26th consecutive opener, the longest streak in the
nation.
Martinez scored on runs of 7, 43 and 47 yards and completed 11
of 22 passes for 116 yards before giving way to Brion (BREE-on)
Carnes in the fourth quarter.
The Mocs of the Football Championship Subdivision scored their
only points when Marlon Anthony caught a 13-yard pass from B.J.
Coleman after cornerback Andrew Green fell.
Martinez, who matched his career high with 19 carries, scored
his first touchdowns in nine games.
