(LeMars) — The LeMars City Council heard a proposal today from McClure Engineering of Fort Dodge that would set forth a plan to update and upgrade the city’s water system. The city is studying the proposal in order to maintain sufficient water needs as the city continues to expand, both in the residential, and the industrial regions of town.
One of the short-term proposals is to change the water metering systems from meters that need to be manually examined to an automated system. The city council has set September 20th at noon for a public hearing on the first phase of the proposal.
(LeMars) — Tomorrow is the annual Knights of Columbus telephone fund raiser for the Life Skills Training Center and the Special Olympics. KC members from each community within the county will be calling residents and businesses asking for donations. Don Nore, the executive director for the Life Skills Training Center hopes to raise $100,000 but also realizes a more realistic goal is to match the challenge of $48,000 of which 90 percent of the raised revenue stays within Plymouth County. Nore says he is appreciative of the Knights of Columbus efforts and of the generosity of Plymouth County residents. He adds the fund raiser is important to the Life Skills Training Center’s existance.

(Merrill) — An accident Sunday afternoon on Highway 75 near Merrill left two people injured. According to the Iowa Highway Patrol, 84-year old Donald Schneider of Hinton was driving his pickup truck escorting a tractor at a slow speed when he was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by Soyna Allen, 32, of LeMars. The Merrill Fire and Rescue assisted with the accident. Both Schneider and Allen were transported to the Mercy Hospital in Sioux City. Their injuries were not deemed as life threatening.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A jury has found the former director of
the Iowa Film Office guilty of misconduct in office.
The jury found Tom Wheeler guilty on 1 count of misconduct and not guilty of
eight other counts of fraud and conspiracy.
The jury had been deliberating since Thursday. Wheeler faces up
to five years in prison. A date for sentencing has not been set.
Prosecutors say Wheeler was an “inside man” for filmmakers who
inflated costs and lied on budget documents to reap millions from a
tax credit program aimed at building Iowa’s film industry.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – Jury selection began Tuesday in Woodbury County District Court
of a Sioux City man charged in a deadly fight. Bradley Gregg is charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault. Gregg is accused of punching Joseph McDonald, of Ida Grove, outside a Sioux City bar in October 2010. McDonald was knocked out and later died. Attorneys expect the trial to last about seven days.
AMES, Iowa (AP) – The flow of Missouri River floodwater has
deepened the channel around a bridge pier and is delaying its
reopening.
The Iowa Department of Transportation says the link carries Iowa
Highway 175 traffic from Monona County west to Decatur Neb.
The bridge was closed June 27 as the swollen Missouri River
eroded the bank. A berm was constructed, but erosion continued.
The department says the river channel around a bridge pier has
been deepened by as much as 42 feet. In addition, embankment
material has been swept away from near the bridge abutment on the
Iowa side.
The department says it must fill the void around the pier in
order to stabilize it. But the work must wait until the floodwater
ebbs further as upstream dam releases are reduced.

RUTHVEN, Iowa (AP) – A 2 1/2- year-old boy has died after being
hit by a riding lawn mower operated by his father on a farm near
Ruthven in northwest Iowa.
The accident happened Friday afternoon.
Rescue crews discovered the child, Kenneth Henningsen, dead at
the scene. His father Curtis Henningsen, was operating the mower.
No other information was immediately available. The accident
remains under investigation.
