1 person killed, another hurt in Iowa City crash
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A North Liberty man has died after his
vehicle crashed into a parked car in Iowa City.
Iowa City police say 19-year-old Tyler Fetters was speeding when
he hit the parked car about 4 a.m. Saturday. He died of his
injuries.
Police say a passenger in his vehicle was taken to a hospital
for non-life-threatening injuries.
50 tow trucks arrive for funerals of 2 killed

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – More than 50 tow trucks have descended
on Des Moines for the funerals of two workers killed while helping
a disabled semi on Interstate 80.
KCCI-TV reports the Iowa State Patrol closed part of a street to
accommodate the trucks during Saturday services for 29-year-old
Jesse Inman of Ankeny, and 60-year-old Daniel Walsh of Des Moines
The men, drivers for Hanifen Towing, were killed Tuesday night
while trying to help an Illinois man whose semitrailer had broken
down in Poweshiek County, east of Des Moines. Another truck crashed
into the vehicles, killing its driver and the other three men.
Iowa man charged after police officer hit by car
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – A Council Bluffs man faces several
charges after authorities say he hit a police officer with his car
while fleeing the scene of a shoplifting.
Police say 27-year-old Jonathan Chestnut was suspected of taking
items from a Lake Manawa store Friday night when he fled, striking
the officer. He was pulled over a short time later and, police say,
three children were in his car.
Chestnut was arrested on suspicion of attempted manslaughter,
aggravated theft and three counts of child endangerment. He’s being
held Saturday in the Pottawattamie County jail.
A number listed for a Jonathan Chestnut in Council Bluffs was
not in service Saturday.
The officer struck by the car was treated at a hospital and
released.
Firing of Mason City, Iowa, police officer upheld
MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) – A city commission has upheld the firing
of a Mason City police officer over her handling of information in
a 1995 abduction.
Maria Ohl was placed on paid administrative leave last year. She
was fired in August but appealed the decision. The Mason City Civil
Service Commission deliberated for almost three hours Friday before
upholding Ohl’s termination.
The firing stemmed from the handling of information in the
abduction and possible slaying of Mason City television anchor Jodi
Huisentruit (HOO’ zen-troot). Huisentruit went missing on her way
to work in 1995.
Ohl testified Friday that she withheld information because it
implicated a police officer she trusted and because she didn’t know
who to give the information to.
The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation later found that
the information wasn’t credible.
Police revive Iowa runner who collapses at meet

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) – A runner from Decorah high school was
revived by two police officers after collapsing at a cross country
meet in Cedar Falls.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports the 17-year-old student
was running in the Rich Engel Cross Country Classic when he
collapsed Thursday evening. A doctor in the crowd started doing CPR
until two Cedar Falls police officers arrived with a defibrillator.
The teen was taken to Sartori Hospital. Officials there say CPR
alone would not have saved the student’s life.
The teen’s name and details of his medical condition have not
been released.
Cedar Falls police have been carrying defibrillators in their
squad cars for the past eight years. Officers are re-certified in
their use each year.
Sioux Falls biotech firms lays off 18 employees

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – A Sioux Falls-based biotechnology firm
says it has laid off 18 employees in response to changing needs of
its parent company.
Hematech CEO Eddie Sullivan tells the Argus Leader
that the layoffs included researchers,
technicians and support staff.
The company works on developing antibodies in cattle to treat
human health conditions. It once envisioned becoming a major
manufacturer of the human antibodies, but its focus has switched to
research.
Hematech still employs 28 people in Sioux Falls and another 11
at its research and development center in Sioux Center, Iowa, where
it houses research animals.
Sullivan says the company at its peak employed 56 people in
Sioux Falls in 28,000 square feet of laboratory space in the Sioux
Falls Technology Park.
Iowa rallies to stun Pittsburgh 31-27
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – James Vandenberg threw three touchdown
passes in the fourth quarter and Iowa rallied from a 17-point
deficit to stun Pittsburgh 31-27 on Saturday.
Vandenberg threw for 399 yards, completing the Hawkeyes’ rally
with a 22-yard TD pass to Kevonte Martin-Manley with 2:51 left.
Iowa (2-1) trailed 27-10 early in the fourth quarter. But
Vandenberg threw TD passes of 14 yards to Keenan Davis and 25 yards
to Martin-Manley to bring the Hawkeyes within three points. He then
found a diving Martin-Manley for the go-ahead score.
Iowa’s Micah Hyde picked off Pittsburgh quarterback Tino Sunseri
with 1:41 left to cap a wild win for the Hawkeyes (2-1), who
narrowly avoided their worst start in 11 years.
Iowa State beat Connecticut Friday night and Northern Iowa was
idle this weekend.
No. 11 Nebraska beats Washington 51-38
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Taylor Martinez threw for two touchdowns
and ran for a third, and No. 11 Nebraska held off Washington for a
wild 51-38 victory on Saturday.
Martinez looked to have put away the Huskies with his 6-yard TD
run, but Keith Price passed 52 yards to James Johnson for his
fourth TD toss to make it a 13-point game with 4:27 left in
Lincoln.
Nebraska (3-0) won the third meeting of the teams in 364 days.
Nebraska won in Seattle last September but lost in a rematch at the
Holiday Bowl.
