Granville Man Charged With Burglary
(Orange City) — A Granville man has been arrested by the Sioux County Sheriff’s office for burglary. John Nelson, 37 years old, was placed under arrest on Thursday evening for burglary for the third, a class D felony and theft in the fifth, a simple misdemeanor. The arrest stemmed from a burglary that occurred at 4667 Lily Avenue on the early morning of June 16. During the investigation it was found that a hay feeder and horse halters were allegedly stolen from a barn.
Le Mars School Superintendent Responds To “No Child Left Behind” Waiver Denial
(Le Mars) — The Iowa Department of Education was denied a waiver of the law, No Child Left Behind. Le Mars Community School District Superintendent, Dr. Todd Wendt says the intent of the law was admirable in the fact that a goal was established to not allow any child fall behind in the comprehension of education. However, the problem arises when you take into consideration the schools across the country have different levels of standards and are not equal in the assessment.

The Le Mars school official says the Iowa plan was set up on a three-year plan. If a school was able to maintain the same level of proficiency for three-years, then that school would be considered proficient. He says the there were still some problems with the system.

Wendt says Le Mars will have some classes, mainly some elementary grades, that will appear as being in the “watch list.”

Grotto of Redemption Celebrates 100 years
(West Bend) — A popular tourist spot for many decades in northwest Iowa is celebrating its centennial this weekend. The Grotto (GROT-oh) of the Redemption in West Bend is hosting a variety of activities through Sunday. Darcie Kramer is the executive director of the historic attraction.

Missouri Man Guilty of Steel Pipe Scheme
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) – A Missouri man convicted of running a multi-state scheme to defraud steel pipe manufacturers in Iowa and elsewhere has been sentenced to 21 months in prison.
U.S. District Judge John Jarvey handed the sentence Friday to 42-year-old Bobby Gene Prince, of Pevely, Mo., who pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud.
Prosecutors say Prince falsely told a Texas construction firm in 2009 that he owned a steel pipe manufacturing company but was getting out of the business and offered to sell $200,000 worth of
steel pipe for $75,000.
Prince falsely posed as an industry broker, and convinced steel pipe manufacturers in Iowa and Nevada to ship pipe on credit to the Texas firm. The shipments soon arrived in Texas, where the company alerted the FBI after suspecting a swindle.
Headstones Toppled
MILLERSBURG, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say two boys are suspected of damaging dozens of headstones at a cemetery in eastern Iowa.
The Iowa County sheriff’s office on Friday says authorities identified two juveniles responsible for the damage. No other details, including the boys’ names, were released.
Three dozen headstones at Millersburg Cemetery were knocked over or moved. The vandalism was discovered last Sunday.
