Discovered Human Remains Could Be Former Home Owner
SAC CITY, Iowa (AP) – Sac City police say human remains discovered in the basement of a recently purchased house could be those of the previous homeowner who disappeared in 2009.
The Sioux City Journal (https://bit.ly/RIKFPt ) says Police Chief John Thomsen says “all signs point” to Mark Koster. He was last seen with a friend on July 4, 2009. He was 58.
The remains were found on Monday by the new homeowner, who was remodeling the basement.
Police searched the house in 2009. Thomsen says there was no indication of foul play, and it appeared Koster left. He was declared legally dead in October 2011.
No one lived in the house after Koster disappeared. Family members sold the house in May.
Des Moines Levee Is Completed
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A levee designed to protect an area north of downtown Des Moines from flooding has been completed.
A study by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Des Moines River was finished after reconstruction designs were completed on the Birdland and Central Place levees. Engineers then decided to raise the height of the levees after a study suggested that major floods like those that hit the city in 1993 and in 2008 are more likely in the future than previously thought.
The Birdland levee was finished last year.
Officials dedicated the Central Place levee on Wednesday. The $5.5 million project included
removing the old levee and rebuilding the earthen embankment. In all, about 2.5 miles of new levees are now in place.
Le Mars Native Joseph Manning Speaks At Gehlen’s Veterans Salute
(Le Mars) — Sunday is Veteran’s Day. A day we honor those men and women who have served in
our military branch of service. At Gehlen Catholic school, Le Mars native and a 1988 Gehlen Catholic graduate Joseph Manning spoke during the Gehlen Catholic Veteran’s salute. Manning is in the Navy Reserves and holds the rank of Master Chief. He says money was a part of an incentive for him to join the Navy.

Manning’s message was to inform the students and the community that it is important to honor those men and women who have served in the military.
