TUESDAY RESULTS – February 12

(LE MARS) — Katelin Langel scored four of her game-high 15 points during a 9-0 run to open the fourth quarter and number-12 Gehlen Catholic rallied to beat Akron-Westfield 31-26 Tuesday night, side-stepping an upset bid in the quarterfinal round of the 1A Regional Tournament. Langel’s three-point play with 5:55 to play erased a 24-23 deficit and put the Lady Jays in front to stay. She added a pair of free throws in the final three minutes to help secure the victory. Abigail Krienert started the fourth quarter surge with a pair of buckets and helped ice the game with a free throw with 1:36 to play to put the Lady Jays in front 30-26. Krienert finished with a career-best nine points. Gehlen trailed 24-19 going into the final quarter but outscored the Westerners 12-2 in the final stanza. Kayla Tindall led A-W with nine points before fouling out. She scored the Westerners only points in the final quarter, hitting a tip-in with with 2:20 to play to cut Gehlen’s lead to 28-26. Free throws by Langel, Krienert and Emily Holtgrewe in the final 1:36 of the game sealed the win. Akron-Westfield finishes the season at 8-and-15 while Gehlen moves on to the semifinals Friday against Remsen-Union at the Reardon Family gym with a 15-and-5 record.

(SIOUX CITY) — Number-seven (4A) Sioux City North used an 11-0 run midway through the third quarter to break free from a scrappy Le Mars team and the Stars went on to beat the Bulldogs 73-58 Tuesday night in Sioux City. Le Mars trailed 27-24 at halftime before being over-powered by the bigger North Stars’ line-up in the second half. North finishes the season at 19-and-2 while Le Mars takes a 15-and-6 record into their tournament opener next Monday at home against Sergeant Bluff-Luton. S-B-L was one of the two teams to beat North this season. Danny Tillo led Sioux City North in scoring Tuesday night with 20 and Deontre Dean added 17. Kyle Dolph led Le Mars with 18 with Jake Irwin and Parker Rolfes adding ten each.

(LE MARS) — Le Mars had little trouble advancing to the 4A Regional semifinals, beating winless Storm Lake 57-30 Wednesday night at the Bulldogs new gym. The Lady Bulldogs sprinted to a 24-8 lead after a quarter and led 43-17 by intermission. The fourth quarter featured a continuous clock after a Molly Renken basketball closed out the third quarter putting Le Mars in front by 35 points. Emily Pick led Le Mars in scoring with 15 points with Mary Kate Eckstaine adding 14. Both sharp-shooters hit three three-pointers. Carolyn Ahlers added another nine points for the Lady Bulldogs. Brenna Richter had 15 for the Tornadoes, hitting four three’s, including a half court buzzer-beater as the first half closed. Le Mars takes a 10-and-12 record to Sioux City Saturday night to meet top-rated Bishop Heelan in the semifinals at 7 o’clock. Storm Lake closes out another winless season at 0-and-22. They have now lost 64 straight games over the last three seasons.

CLASS 1A RESULTS: 182#-Akron-Westfield’s Taylor James (34-6) lost 3-1 in the first round but bounced back with a 17-0 TF in the consolation bracket ..
Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn’s Jacob Meehan won his first round match by a fall at 182# .. Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn’s Dylan Rolfes lost his first round match by a fall at 160# but came back to pin his first round consolation opponent to stay alive .. West Sioux’s Jose Montes lost his first round match 12-6 at 113# but won by a fall in the consolation bracket. Woodbury Central advanced five wrestlers, Dylan Muckey (106#), Gabe Verschoor (120#), Lane Nichols (126#), Levi Paulsen (220#) and Landon Paulsen (285#), into the quarterfinals and are second behind Alburnett in the team standings after day one. Emmetsburg also advanced four wrestlers into the quarterfinals and are tied for third in the team standings. Nick Schany (170#), Andrew Wellik (182#), Austin McCarten (195#) and Taylor Wegner (220#) are the E-Hawk hopefuls. Other Siouxland wrestlers that won opening round matches — Zach Ulven of Westwood (113#), Jake Haberman (160#) & Mitch Gambrell (285#) of Central Lyon/George-Little Rock and Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Dylan Brockshus (182#).
CLASS 3A FIRST ROUND AND FIRST ROUND CONSOLATION: 195#-Le Mars’ Chris Hiserote (17-16) was pinned in 5:03 by Fort Dodge’s Riley Prescott in the first round and was eliminated in the consolation round when he was pinned in 2:20 by Casey Becker of Cedar Rapids Prairie.
Three Siouxland wrestlers advanced with first round victories. Sioux City North’s Shane Gill (120#) won 4-1 .. Storm Lake’s Juan Figueroa (132#) won 6-5 .. and Sioux City North’s Dustin Fuller (170#) won by a fall in 25 seconds. Sioux City West’s Anthony Combs (220#) stayed alive in the consolation bracket with a fall after losing 2-0 in his first round match.
CLASS 2A FIRST ROUND AND FIRST ROUND CONSOLATION: Sixteen Siouxland wrestlers advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals. Sergeant Bluff-Luton advanced Devin Phaly (106#), Colton McCrystral (132#), Bret Thompson (152#), and Tyler Nguyen (220#). Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley advanced Hunter Berkenpas (152#), Dallas Rozeboom (182#), and Tyler Dolieslager (220#). Spencer moved John Christopherson (126#) and Levi Gilmore (132#) into the second round. Spirit Lake landed defending State champion Doug Minor (120#) and Zach Skopec (138#) in the quarterfinals and Cherokee’s Hunter Morrow (126#), Estherville/Lincoln Central’s Oscar Ramirez (132#), Western Christian/Unity Christian’s Jacob Van Ginkel (160#), Bishop Heelan’s Christian Probst (195#) and Sheldon/South O’Brien’s Bryce Kelleher (220#) also advanced. Staying alive with consolation wins Thursday night were Spencer’s Bailey Hawn (120#) and Tanner Schaefer (160#), Sergeant Bluff’s Steven Garcia (138#), E-L-C’s Blake Gjerde (145#) and Sheldon/South O’Brien’s Toby Maggert (170#).

Both the Le Mars guys and gals qualified for the 1A State Bowling Tournament in Des Moines next Thursday by winning the team title in the qualifting meet at Sweet 16 Lanes in Le Mars Thursday. Brock Hofland also qualified to compete individually with a 405 series score. OA-BCIG’s Kirstin Weber topped the girls series scores with a 364.

(LE MARS) — In the final basketball game between Gehlen and Spalding before the two catholic schools merge next school year, the Gehlen Catholic Jays rolled to a 67-45 1A District tournament win Thursday night at the Reardon Family gym. The Jays sprinted out to a 12-0 lead five minutes into the game and were never seriously challenged for the rest of the night in winning for the 11th straight time in the series. The Spartans narrowed a 17-point second quarter deficit to nine with 3:20 to play before halftime but Gehlen closed the first half with a 7-1 run to push the lead back up to 15 by the halftime break. The lead quickly stretched to 20 two minutes into the second half and reached 25 in the fourth quarter. Michael Whitehead led the Jays scoring attack with 15, Blake Wiltgen and Alex Kellen had 11 each with Solomon Freking, Colton Kneip and Derek Bretey collecting eight each. Spalding’s Michael Grady led all scorers with 16 with Jarod Steffes adding 13 to the Spartan cause and Ryan Stoll had 10. Spalding Catholic ends their final basketball campaign at 10-and-12 while Gehlen moves into the semifinals of the 1A District Tournament with a 17-and-4 mark. The Jays will host Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn next Tuesday at the Reardon Family gym. The Jays and Eagles split their two regular season games.

Dylan Muckey of Woodbury Central at 106#, Colby McIntire of Central Lyon/George-Little Rock at 126#, Tyler Leuer of Emmetsburg at 132#, Jake Mize of Woodbury Central at 145#, Brady Bailey of Emmetsburg and West Monona’s Logan Moore at 152#, Dru Kenny of Ridge View at 160#, Jacob Meehen of Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn won by a fall at 170#, Taylor James of Akron-Westfield won by a fall at 182#, and Michael Davidson of Ridge View at 220#. Both Jose Montes of West Sioux and Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn’s Dylan Rolfes lost for a second time and were eliminated.
CLASS 3A QUARTERFINALS: Shane Gill of Sioux City North lost 17-5 at 120#, Juan Figueroa of Storm Lake lost by a fall at 132#, and Dustin Fuller of Sioux City North lost 9-0 at 170#. Only Dustin Fuller won his second round consolation match and is the lone Siouxland area wrestler that will place in Class 3A.
CLASS 2A QUARTERFINALS: Seven Siouxland area wrestlers advanced to the semifinals. Doug Minor of Spirit Lake Park at 120#, Colton McCrystal of Sergeant Bluff-Luton and Oscar Ramirez of Estherville/Lincoln Central at 132#, Zach Skopec of Spirit Lake Park at 138#, Jacob Van Ginkel of Western Christian/Unity Christian at 160#, and Tyler Dolieslager of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley and Bryce Kelleher of Sheldon/South O’Brien at 220#.

Akron-Westfield’s Tayler James will wrestle for seventh place at 195# after losing 8-5 in the third round of consolation round matches Friday night. Marcua/Meriden-Cleghorn’s Jacob Meehen won by a fall in his third round consolation match Friday night and will wrestle at 10 a.m. Saturday to determine whether he’ll wrestle in the third place match or the fifth place match.
CLASS 2A SEMIFINALS: Three wrestlers from Siouxland earned spots in the finals with semifinal round victories. Doug Minor of Spirit Lake Park at 120#, Colton McCrystal of Sergeant Bluff-Luton at 132# and Tyler Dolieslager of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley at 220#.

(LE MARS) — Number-12 Gehlen Catholic rallied from a 17-16 halftime deficit against Remsen-Union Friday night to beat the Rockets 47-34 at the Reardon Family gym. The victory moves the Lady Jays into the 1A Regional finals for the second consecutive year. Gehlen took the lead for good two minutes into the second half and led by seven going into the fourth quarter. An 11-2 start to the final quarter put the Lady Jays in front by 16 with four minutes to play. Senior Katelin Langel once again led the Gehlen scoring attack with 16 points. Emily Holtgrewe drilled three three-pointers and finished with 11. Brittany Weikel had 12 for R-U and Brittany Sudtelgte 10. Remsen-Union finishes the season at 10-and-14 while Gehlen Catholic improves to 16-and-5. The Lady Jays meet number-four Ar-We-Va Monday night in Mapleton at 7 o’clock for a trip to the 1A State tournament.

(SIOUX CITY) — Top-rated Bishop Heelan had to withstand a furious fourth quarter rally by Le Mars to sideline the Lady Bulldogs 59-53 Saturday night in the 4A Regional semifinals at ‘The Pit’ in Sioux City. Le Mars built a 12-4 lead five minutes into the game before the Crusaders clamped down defensively and outscored the Lady Bulldogs 24-4 over the final eleven minutes of the first half for a 13-point lead by the midway break. A 9-3 burst to begin the second half put Heelan up by 19 at the 4:25 mark of the third quarter. Le Mars finished the third period on a 12-3 run to whittle the deficit to ten by the quarter break and continued their charge into the fourth quarter. The Lady Bulldogs closed to within five points with 1:42 to play and moved to within four points on a three-point play by Mary Kate Eckstaine with 14 seconds left. All-stater MaKayla Augustine had a three-point play and added a pair of free throws in the final 34 seconds to keep Le Mars at bay and send the Crusaders into the Regional finals Tuesday night against Spencer at the Cherokee gym. Augustine, who went over the 1,000 point mark for her career, led Bishop Heelan with 23 points, connecting on six of her teams eleven three-point baskets. Taylor Koolstra added 12 for the Crusaders. Molly Renken led a balanced Le Mars attack with 14, Carolyn Ahlers had 12, Mary Kate Eckstaine 11 and Emily Pick 10. They were part of a contingent of eight seniors that closed out their basketball careers at Le Mars Community Saturday night. Le Mars ends the season at 10-and-13. Bishop Heelan improves to 19-and-3.
