Fair Sets New Attendance Record
(Le Mars) — More than 100 thousand people attended this year’s Plymouth County Fair which ended yesterday. Vice President of the fairboard and chairman of the ticket committee, Rich Benson offers the final numbers.

The fair board official says this year set an attendance record. Only one other time, back
in 2006, was the Plymouth County Fair able to have more than 100 thousand visitors. Benson says most definitely, the weather was the major factor, but he says the variety of entertainment also helped with attendance.

Benson says the Plymouth County Fair drew people not only from Plymouth and neighboring counties, but several people even from other states.

Fair Board Auction Raises More Than $17,000
(Le Mars) — The Plymouth County Fair board’s annual auction held on Sunday brought more than $17 thousand and fair board treasurer Tom Galles says the money raised helps with capital investments to make improvements for the fairgrounds.

This year the auction sold quilts, collectable belt buckles, toy trucks, benches that were made from the old dairy barn, collectable Well’s Dairy milk cans, and wood carvings made by A.J. Lutter, a chainsaw artist.

One item that sold this year will benefit the Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department with new equipment purchases. A quilt that was created by Jeri Dreckman that honored the Wells’ 100th Anniversary sold for $5000. Mike and Cheryl Wells were the buyers of the quilt.
Le Mars Fire Chief Dave Schipper says the proceeds from the quilt auction will go to help purchase a new camera.

Prisoner Of War Hero Dies
(Sioux City) — An American hero has passed away. Colonel George F. “Bud” Day died Sunday at his Florida home. Colonel Day was originally from Sioux City. He was an air force fighter pilot that was shot down over North Viet Nam and spent time in the “Hanoi Hilton” prison. He shared a war prison cell with Senator John McCain of Arizona. Day was a decorated veteran having received the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Truck Accident On I-29 Causes Concern About Bridge
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – Officials closed Interstate 29 in western Iowa Sunday to check for bridge damage after a fiery semitrailer truck crash that killed one person.
A northbound truck flew off an overpass over Avenue G in Council Bluffs around 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The truck caught fire and spilled diesel fuel on the road.
Acting Council Bluffs Fire Chief Jim Maaske says firefighters contained the blaze in about 10 minutes, but the fire may have damaged the bridge.
I-29 traffic was being rerouted Sunday while Iowa Roads Department engineers evaluated the bridge.
Gasoline Prices Likely To Increase
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa motorists who buy gasoline without ethanol could soon see a price jump at the pump.
Iowa’s largest pipeline operator, Magellan Midstream Partners, will no longer ship “clear” 87 octane regular gasoline to its Iowa terminals.
Instead, the pipeline operator will start shipping 84 octane fuel, which can be blended with more expensive 91 octane fuel to produce the regular 87 octane product. Iowa requires a minimum 87
octane fuel at gas pumps.
The change means that both the new 87 octane and 91 octane fuels without ethanol will likely cost more at the pump.
Magellan spokesman Bruce Heine says the change is driven by pipeline customers, including refiners, petroleum traders and petroleum marketers.
The change takes effect on Sept. 15.
