Le Mars School Board to Meet
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Community Board of Education are scheduled to meet this evening , and although the local school board has a short agenda, they will discuss the students’ performance of the Iowa Tests during the 2012-2013 year.
It is expected Assistant Superintendent Steve Webner will offer a report to the school board, that shows grades 3-5 were 84.71 percent proficient in the reading category goal. That figure does meet with the ten percent reduction goal as established with the “no child left behind” educational requirements.
Sixth through Eighth grade reading scored a 75.77 percent proficiency. The goal was to reach 77.34 percent. The high school reading score was at 81.40 percent proficiency. The district’s goal for that grade level was 84.31 percent. In Mathematics, the school district was able to reach its proficientcy goal in the 6-8 grade level at 86.46 percent, and in the Science category, both the 3-5 and 6-8 grade levels achieved their proficientcy goals with scores of 78.82 and 78.57 percent.

Broken Kettle Preserve Receives Grant
A Sioux City-based foundation’s grant will enable expansion of the Broken Kettle Grassland Preserve in northwest Iowa.
The Gilchrist Foundation awarded $103,410 to the Nature Conservancy to help buy and restore 22 acres in the northwest corner of the Plymouth County preserve. The land will aid the conservancy’s bison herd, which in turn plays a key role in preserving the grassland.
The conservancy began buying property in the area in 1993 and now owns 3,217 acres at Broken Kettle.
The organization introduced 28 bison to Broken Kettle in 2008 to control invasive plants and create habitat for other animals. There now are more than 100 bison, and the conservancy hopes to acquire land to maintain 250 of the animals.

Le Mars Chamber Fundraiser
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Chamber of Commerce has announced its fall main street fundraiser campaign. The Chamber will host a mystery dinner theater scheduled for Thursday, November 14th at the Le Mars Convention Center.
The production is being directed by Danna Schuster and will feature 14 of Le Mars’ local personalities in a play entitled “All Aboard the S.S. Titanica.”

Seven Traffic Fatals In Iowa
(Des Moines)– Authorities say at least seven people died on one day in Iowa traffic accidents. In eastern Iowa on Saturday night, a 3-year-old and two adults were killed when a truck collided with their car. Other people died in accidents in Tiffin, Warren County and Taylor County.
