Plymouth County Supervisors Will Not Meet
(Le Mars) — The Plymouth County Board of Supervisors will not have a meeting today due to a lack of agenda items.
City Council To Discuss Rezoning Of Dogwood First Addition
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars City Council is scheduled to meet today. The city council is
expected to discuss and take action on rezoning Dogwood First Addition, as well as talk
about the collective bargaining employee contract. The council is also scheduled to accept
the 27th Street RISE project.
Le Mars Man Arrested For Possession Of Methamphetamine
(Le Mars) — A Le Mars man was arrested and faces drug charges after a traffic stop early
Monday. Plymouth County sheriff’s office stated in a news release that Timothy Orban, 40,
was stopped at 2:00 a.m. at the intersection of County roads C-60 and K-22, west of Hinton
for traffic violations. The traffic stop led to Orban’s arrest. He faces a felony charge
of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, his third offense. He has also
been charged with misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and driving on a
suspended license. Orban was taken to the Plymouth County jail with bond set at $5,000.
Police Wait For Autopsy Before Making Additional Charges Against Daycare Provider
(Orange City) — Orange City Police are awaiting preliminary results of an autopsy to determine whether an Orange City daycare provider will face additional charges after the death of three year old Autumn Elgersma. The little girl died Thursday at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls. Police say she suffered a skull fracture and brain trauma at a daycare facility on Tuesday. Before the girl died, daycare provider Rochelle Sapp, 33, was arrested on suspicion of felony willful injury and child endangerment. Police say she admitted throwing the child on the floor. Orange City Police Chief Jim Pottebaum says he thought the autopsy report would have been completed by Monday, but that didn’t happen. Sapp has been set free after posting a $10,000 bond. Pottebaum said if charges
against Sapp become more severe she will be arrested again with a new bail amount set
accordingly. Pottebaum says “there is a good chance the charges will be upgraded, but again we’re are waiting on the results, before we say anything concrete.”
City Elections Scheduled For Today
(Le Mars) — Today is election day for area communities to decide upon a mayor and city council candidates. In Le Mars, there is only one contested race for Ward I City Council seat. Real estate broker Clark Goodchild is challenging incumbent John Leonard. Leonard is an insurance agent. Mayor Dick Kirchoff is running unopposed, as are council members Rex Knapp and Ken Nelson. Le Mars voters will also decide on hospital trustees. Bill Young and Craig Bauerly are seeking re-election, and both are unopposed. Polls opened at 12:00 noon and will remain open until 8:00 p.m.
Bridge Repaired, Road Opens
CARSON, Iowa (AP) – State Transportation Department officials say a highway bridge in western Iowa will reopen to traffic this week after extensive repairs.
Officials say the U.S. Highway 59 bridge over Iowa Highway 92 in Carson will open with
the completion of work necessary after the span was struck last fall by a truck hauling
construction equipment. The crash caused damaged to four bridge beams and required the
closure of the bridge.
A detour has been used since the crash.
The normal route will resume when the bridge reopens.
Iowa Public Radio Selects New Executive Director
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa Public Radio has named a new executive director several months
after its last CEO was fired.
The Board of Directors announced Monday that Myrna Johnson will begin the job on Jan. 27 of next year. She was recently the executive director of the Boston Schoolyard Initiative in Massachusetts.
Johnson replaces Mary Grace Herrington, who was fired in February over concerns about her management style. Iowa Public Radio later reached a settlement with her that dropped any claims against the organization.
Iowa Public Radio also recently settled two lawsuits filed by Michael Gartner, a former Iowa Board of Regents member. Gartner claimed the board held improper private meetings.
Iowa Tourism Asking People To Select Cover Photo
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa tourism officials are using the Internet to help determine the cover of the state’s next travel guide.
The Iowa Tourism Office says people can vote between three cover options on the department’s Facebook page. The photos were chosen from more than 600 images submitted by
people.
The guide is Iowa’s trip-planning publication. It lists from more than 700 attractions, 750 hotels, 200 bed and breakfasts and 350 campgrounds.
The covers either show one destination or several. They range from an image of motorcycling in the Loess Hills to an image of tubing on the Mississippi River.
People have until Friday to vote. The winning cover will be announced on Nov. 12. The new guide will be available in early 2014.
