Floyd Valley Hospital Issues Annual Report To Public
(Le Mars) — The Floyd Valley Hospital recently distributed its annual report, and hospital administrator Mike Donlin says this past year has been an interesting year for the hospital.
Donlin says the annual report offers the community a summary of the hospital’s functions.

In the annual report, the hospital features an article with graphics explaining about the
geothermal wells. Donlin says the installation of such wells will help reduce energy costs for the hospital.

Semi Trailer Loaded With Turkeys Overturns
STORM LAKE, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say high winds caused a trailer full of turkeys to overturn on the side of a highway in northwest Iowa.
The Sac County Sheriff’s Office says 760 turkeys were in the trailer when it was blown over Sunday night on Highway 20.
A semitrailer helping to carry the turkeys was headed to a processing plant in Storm Lake when the driver pulled over due to a mechanical malfunction. The trailer was unhooked from the power unit and dollied. The accident happened as the trailer was dollied.
Officials say 70 percent of the birds died. Emergency responders cut holes in the trailer to help remove turkeys that were dead and alive.
Gunshots Reported At Iowa State University
AMES, Iowa (AP) – Gunshots were reported on the Iowa State University campus in Ames, and officials say a suspect is in custody.
Iowa State University police say the incident happened Monday morning on central campus
as part of a vehicle chase by Ames police. There are no reports of injuries.
The university posted on its website there is no threat to the community. Police say people should avoid an area that is cordoned off.
The Iowa State Daily, the university’s student newspaper, reports an alert was sent to ISU students at 10:55 a.m. saying the threat was over.
The Iowa State Daily reports Warren Madden, the university’s senior vice president, says police told him the pickup truck involved in the incident was stolen.
Escaped Inmate Is Captured
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – An inmate who’d escaped from the Fort Des Moines work release
facility has been captured.
State prisons spokesman Fred Scaletta said in an email Monday that 27-year-old Orlando
Rodriguez would be booked into Polk County Jail. Rodriguez was listed as escaped after he
didn’t return to the Fort Des Moines work release facility early Sunday morning.
Rodriguez has been serving time for the hit-and-run slaying of an Iowa guardsman. In
September 2009 Orlando Rodriguez and his brother Santos Rodriguez stole $27 worth of
gasoline from a Des Moines convenience store and sped away. Their truck struck and killed
49-year-old Bruce Mundy. The 30-year member of the Iowa Air National Guard was riding his
motorcycle home from work.
Santos Rodriguez also was sentenced to prison.
Flu Strains Hit Iowa
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Health officials say there are three strains of influenza currently circulating in Iowa.
The state Department of Public Health says influenza activity in the state remains at a low level, but the three strains mean an individual could become ill with the flu three different times.
The strains include a regular seasonal strain and a 2009 pandemic strain.
Officials say vaccination is the best protection. The flu vaccine covers all three detected strains.
Influenza is a respiratory illness caused by viruses. The department says an average of 300,000 people in Iowa get the flu every year.
