Sioux City Police Arrest Juveniles For Shooting Out Car Windows

(Sioux City) — Sioux City Police are reporting they have arrested four juveniles thought to be responsible for damaging car windows of 45 vehicles.  The incidents happened during the overnight and early morning hours of March 7th and March 8th.  The suspects, all from South Sioux City, Nebraska, were identified as being involved using a BB gun to shoot out the windows of vehicles.  The juvenile suspects, two are 15, and the other two are 16 years of age.  Police say witnesses saw the suspects shoot out a car window and reported it to the Sioux City Police Department.  Officers located the suspects a short time later and arrested them on traffic charges at that time.  Investigators interviewed the suspects and determined that they were involved in shooting out multiple windows throughout Sioux City’s north and west side.  All four have been charged with Criminal Mischief in the first degree which is a Class C felony for causing over $10,000 in damage.  Due to the fact the suspects are juveniles, the police are withholding their names.

 

Police Obtain Warrent For Robbery Suspect 

(Sioux City) — The Sioux City Police Department has obtained an arrest warrent for Jose Luis Cruz-Cuilty who is suspected of armed robbery of a McDonalds on Sunnybrook Drive. Police arrested Cruz-CUilty after he stole gas from a Kum & Go convience store in Elk Point, South Dakota. He tried eluding police. Police thought he may be involved in the robbery after finding a weapon on him and recognizing he matched the description of the suspect provided by witnesses. He has been charged with First Degree robbery and is being held in the Union county jail.

  

Local K9 Units Place Third in Competition

(Le Mars) — Police canine units from Le Mars Police Department, Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, and Sioux County sheriff’s Office teamed up together to compete in the United States Canine Association yearly regional narcotic trials.  This year the competition was held on Wednesday at Marshalltown.  There were 46 different canine units competing from Iowa and South Dakota.  Each participating canine unit joined other canines to create a four unit team for the competition.  The Le Mars, Plymouth County, and Sioux County canine unit placed third in this year’s competition.

 

Sioux County Authorities Investigate Thefts

 (Orange City) — Sioux County authorities are investigating a burglary that happened Thursday night at a Maurice residence.  Sometime during the overnight hours of 11:30 Thursday evening and 6:00 Friday morning, someone entered an unloced residence in Maurice and stole a purse that was located on the kitchen table.  The occupants of the residence were at home sleeping at the time of the incident.  Nothing else was disturbed or reported missing.  The Sioux County sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information about the crime to contact the Sioux County sheriff’s office.  People can remain anonymous by using the Sheriff’s “text-a-tip” program.

(Orange City) — Sioux County Sheriff’s deputies are also investigating a theft from a Boyden home.  The homeowners discovered they were missing money, which was taken from their residence.  A large amount of coins, along with cash was taken.  The theft occurred sometime in the month of March.

 

Braley Campigns On “Iowa Works Tour”

(Des Moines) — Congressman Bruce Braley has spent part of this week visiting with people in jobs similar to those Braley held in the past, campaign events designed to highlight Braley’s biography as he runs for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by fellow Democrat Tom Harkin.

 Braley was at Iowa State University Thursday, revisiting the campus newspaper when he had a paying job while he was an I-S-U student.

Braley talked with I-S-U and DMACC (DEE-mack) students this week about student loans and he talked with most of the crowds about raising the minimum wage.

 This week Braley has scheduled stops at workplaces in Council Bluffs, Sioux City, Ankeny, Dougherty, Waterloo, Dubuque and Davenport.

 

SUV Tries to Run Over Des Moines Police

(DES MOINES)– Des Moines police say an SUV driver who tried to run down some officers has been shot.A news release says officers were dispatched around 11:45 p.m. Thursday to check several reports of gunshots in a central Des Moines neighborhood. The officers were checking cars struck by gunfire and ooking for bullet casings when the sport utility vehicle approached thecrime scene. 
      Police say the officers tried to stop the SUV from running through the scene, but the SUV accelerated toward the officers. Three officers fired at the SUV driver, later identified as 30-year-old Shawntee Deiyane Young, before he raced away. 
     The SUV was found a few blocks away, and a wounded Young was found inside a nearby residence. He was taken to Mercy Hospital and reported in stable condition.

 

Jury Foreman Empathizes With Voting Fraud Suspect

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The foreman of a jury that acquitted a former Iowa drug offender of voter fraud says she made an honest mistake when she cast a ballot because she believed her voting rights were restored.
     Mike Hickey of Keokuk said Friday jurors unanimously agreed that Kelli Jo Griffin didn’t have criminal intent when she voted in the November 5th municipal election in Montrose.
     The jury took about 40 minutes to acquit Griffin of perjury in the first trial stemming from Iowa’s two-year voter fraud investigation. The 40-year-old mother of young children had faced a prison sentence if convicted.
     Hickey says jurors believed Griffin’s testimony that she thought she regained her rights when she was discharged from probation last year, which had been the policy at the time of her 2008 conviction.

 

Dead Fish To Be Removed From Iowa City Ponds

 IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Officials say hundreds of dead fish will need to be removed from two ponds in an Iowa City neighborhood.
      The fish were recently discovered in two ponds in the Idyllwild neighborhood.
     Kurt Kimmerling, president of the neighborhood’s homeowners association, says he sent an email to residents on Friday to notify them of the situation. 
     Kimmerling says some of the dead fish weigh up to 30 pounds. They started to surface as the ice melted.
     The state Department of Natural Resources has been contacted. The agency says it expects similar cases in other Iowa cities.
