(HINTON) — Winning pitcher Teresa DeRocher singled home Aly Vondrak with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday night for a walk-off, 6-5 win for the Hinton Blackhawks over the Gehlen Catholic Lady Jays in War Eagle Conference softball at Hinton. Gehlen had tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh on a RBI single by Paris Schroeder and bases-loaded walk to Miranda Bunkers. Taylor Johnson and Kelli Gleason had three hits each for Hinton while Emily Pratt and Meghen Heying had two hits each for Gehlen. The Lady Jays fall to 2-and-5 for the season and 1-and-3 in the W-E-C.
(LE MARS) —Emily Eaton fired a one-hitter for Bishop Heelan Monday night as the Crusaders pummeled the Le Mars Lady Bulldogs 12-2 in five innings in non-conference softball action at the Bulldogs Complex. Janessa Milbrodt’s second inning single was the lone Le Mars hit off Eaton who finished with six strike outs and no walks. Bailey Heaton keyed a five-run fourth inning with a grandslam for the Crusaders. Heaton also had a three-run double in the second and finished with four hits and seven RBI’s. Le Mars falls to 3-and-4 for the season.

(HINTON) — Blake Wiltgen had four hits and five RBI’s Monday night in Hinton to lead unbeaten Gehlen Catholic to a 14-1 blitz of the Hinton Blackhawks in a War Eagle Conference baseball match-up. Wiltgen’s two-run triple highlighted a six-run fifth inning that broke up a 1-1 pitcher’s duel. Wiltgen added a two-run double in the seventh inning and also had a RBI single in the third that tied the game at 1-all. Lucas Hunt finished with three hits for the Jays. His RBI double in the fifth put Gehlen in front to stay. Gehlen finished with 15 hits. Brady Heying and Jarod Steffes combined on a six-hitter for the Jays. Logan Jurgensmeier, a first team all-conference pick as a sophomore last season for Hinton when he went 10-and-0 in the regular season, gave up six runs in four innings to fall to 0-and-2 this season. The win improves Gehlen’s record to 4-and-0 for the season and 3-and-0 in league play. Hinton, last season conference champions, is now 2-and-2 in the W-E-C race and 3-and-4 for the season.
(LE MARS) — Le Mars’ Payton Pick was sailing along with a 5-0 lead and throwing a no-hitter with nine strike outs through the first five innings against Sioux City West Monday night before the Wolverines scored ten runs in the sixth inning and rallied beat the Bulldogs 10-6 at the Bulldog Complex. After Pick walked the first two batters to open the sixth, Bulldog coach Trent Eckstaine elected to go to the bullpen and not much went right after that. West bunched all five hits for the night into the sixth and executed three squeeze bunts successfully. Dayton Rand drove in three runs for Le Mars with Cameron Leff and Caleb Cline adding one RBI each. The Bulldogs fall to 1-and-3 for the season.

(LE MARS) — Gehlen Catholic’s Meghen Heying scattered seven hits in the pitching circle and had two hits at the plate to lead the Lady Jays to a 4-2 War Eagle Conference softball victory over Harris-Lake Park Wednesday night at the Riverview Complex in Le Mars. Jolee Linden also had two hits for Gehlen. The Lady Jays improve to 3-and-5 for the year and 2-and-3 in the W-E-C. They’ll travel to Unity Christian Friday. The game will be carried on KLEM starting at 7:30.
(STORM LAKE) — Madison Heidebrink drove in four runs on a single and triple to back Kassidy Rieken’s six-hit pitching performance as Le Mars won their Lakes Conference opener Wednesday night in Storm Lake, 7-1. Janessa Milbrodt also had two hits and one RBI for Le Mars. The Lady Bulldogs are 4-and-4 for the season and return to action Friday in the Sioux City West Earlybird Tournament.

(LE MARS) — Gehlen Catholic ran their record to 5-and-0 and their War Eagle Conference mark to 4-and-0 with a 12-1, five inning victory over conference newcomer, Harris-Lake Park Wednesday night at the Riverview Complex. Ty Kurth made his first pitching appearance of the season and fired a complete-game, three-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Jays. Brady Heying led Gehlen at the plate with two hits, including a double, and three RBI’s. Blake Wiltgen continues his sizzling start at the plate for Gehlen with two more hits and two RBI’s. A six-run fourth inning broke the game open. Gehlen plays at Unity Christian Thursday night.
(STORM LAKE) — Colan Borchers came within one batter of a perfect game Wednesday night in Storm Lake and struck out a career-best 15 batters to pitch the Le Mars Bulldogs to a 13-0, five inning victory over the Storm Lake Tornadoes. It was the Lakes Conference opener for both teams as Le Mars looks for their fourth straight conference title. The only base runner for Storm Lake reached on a two-out error in the third inning. That was the only batter to make contact against Borchers (1-1). Dayton Rand led Le Mars at the plate with three hits and three RBI’s. Cameron Leff also drove in three runs for the Dogs. Le Mars had eleven hits for the night. The Bulldogs improve to 2-and-3 for the season and start a three-game home stand Friday night against Emmetsburg.
(UNDATED) — Remsen St. Mary’s ran their record to 8-and-0 with a 9-1 win over Akron-Westfield Wednesday in War Eagle Conference baseball play. Elliott Conover tossed a two-hitter for the Hawks with seven strike outs. Brady Harpenau drove in three runs for the winners. The Westerners fall to 1-and-5.

Ahlers dropped into the consolation bracket and defeated her teammate Britney Thompson 6-0, 6-2. Ahlers faces Hannah Fox of Waverly-Shell Rock Friday in the consolation semifinals.
Britney Thompson lost her first round match 3-6, 3-6 to Courtney Schneider of Wahlert. Thompson defeated Claire Van Weelden of Pella Christian in the consolation bracket 1-6, 6-3, 1-0(10) but was eliminated by Emily Ahlers 0-6, 2-6 in the consolation quarterfinals.

(ORANGE CITY) — Madison Dorhout’s eighth inning triple scored Anna Christians from first base with the winning run as Unity Christian edged Gehlen Catholic 8-7 in extra innings Friday night in War Eagle Conference softball action in Orange City. Unity squandered leads of 4-0 and 5-2 before earning their first win over the Lady Jays in the last ten games. Bailey Wiltgen belted her second home run of the season in the sixth inning to tie the game 5-all. The Lady Knights took advantage of a Gehlen error to score two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim a 7-5 advantage. However, two Unity Christian errors led to two Gehlen runs in the top of the seventh to again tie the game at 7-7. Meghen Heying’s single to right brought the tying run across the plate for Gehlen. The Lady Jays loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth but couldn’t score. Winning pitcher Tessa Schoonhoven pitched out of several jams throughout the game as Gehlen stranded twelve base runners. She walked eight and hit three batters while checking the Lady Jays to six hits. Schoonhoven helped her cause, belting a two-run homer to highlight a four-run first inning. Gehlen falls to 3-and-6 for the season and 2-and-4 in the W-E-C.
(SIOUX CITY) — Le Mars won one and lost one at the Sioux City West earlybird softball tournament Friday. In the first game of the day for Le Mars, Lawton-Bronson’s Lexi Binder threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts to pitch the Eagles to a 5-2 win over Le Mars. Janessa Milbrodt allowed only six hits for Le Mars and struck out five but two costly errors led to two unearned runs. Le Mars used a pair of nine-run innings in the second game of the day to rout Hinton 21-2 in three innings to improve their record to 5-and-5 for the season. The Lady Bulldogs bunched seven hits with twelve walks to score nine runs in the first inning, two more in the second and nine more in the third. The game ended on the 12-run ‘Mercy Rule’. Janessa Milbrodt and Andrea Urban drove in three runs apiece to lead Le Mars offensively. Crystal Eppling and Ellie Meade had two hits each.

(LE MARS) — Le Mars held off Emmetsburg’s seventh inning rally to improve to 2-and-0 in Lakes Confernce baseball play with an 8-7 victory Friday night at the Bulldog Complex. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead but a five-run third by the E-Hawks forced Le Mars to play from behind. The Dogs erupted for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim an 8-5 advantage before Emmetsburg plated two runs in their last at-bat before Payton Pick halted the rally. Pick earned the win in relief. Starting pitcher Cameron Leff worked five innings, allowing three hits, three walks and seven strike outs. Pick gave up one hit, walked two and struck out two. Four Le Mars errors nearly proved costly, leading to two unearned runs. Mitch Sitzmann had two hits for the Bulldogs with Dayton Rand and Mitch Timp driving in two runs each. The Dogs capitalized on nine walks. Le Mars improves to 3-and-3 for the season. They’ll return to action Monday, hosting Spirit Lake.

(CARROLL) — Gehlen Catholic beat Storm Lake St. Mary’s 13-5 in their first round game at the C-Y-O Tournament in Carroll Saturday but dropped an 8-0 decision to Bishop Heelan in the semifinals and lost 13-3 in five innings to Kuemper Catholic in the third place game. In the win over Storm Lake St. Mary’s the Lady Jays got two hits each from Bailey Wiltgen, Jill Kessenich, Miranda Bunkers and Melissa Schmit to pace an 11-hit attack. Wiltgen had a double and triple and drove in four runs. Emily Eaton held Gehlen to four hits and struck out seven to pitch Bishop Heelan to a shutout win in the semifinals. Makenzie Pratt drove in three runs on two hits for the Crusaders. Kuemper pummeled Gehlen with a 14-hit attack to win the consolation game on the ten-run rule in five innings. Elsie Berg and Hannah Macke had three RBI’s each for the Knights. Taylor Peters had two hits for Gehlen. The Lady Jays take a 4-and-8 record to Granville Monday to play South O’Brien.
(SIOUX CITY) — Le Mars closed out play in the Sioux City West Earlybird Tournament Saturday with a 7-3 win over Sioux City East and a 10-9 victory over Sioux City West to finish 3-and-1 in the two-day tournament. Janessa Milbrodt turned in her best pitching performance to date, throwing a six-hitter with five strike outs as the Lady Bulldogs avenged a 15-4 loss May 28 to Sioux City East. Madison Heidebrink had a two-run double in the first inning and Le Mars never trailed after that. Kassidy Rieken’s two-run homer in the sixth sealed the outcome. Grace Milbrodt’s two-run single in the sixth inning gave Le Mars to a 10-9 walk-off win over West. Milbrodt finished with two hits and three RBI’s and Crystal Eppling had two hits and three RBI’s for Le Mars. Kassidy Rieken earned the win in relief of starter Kalin Hardyk. Le Mars takes a 7-and-5 record into a Lakes Conference match-up with Spirit Lake Monday at the Bulldog Complex. The game will be featured on KLEM at 7 p.m.

(CARROLL) — Top-rated (3A) Bishop Heelan took advantage of a shaky Gehlen defense to rally past the Jays 6-4 Saturday in the opening round of the C-Y-O baseball tournament in Carroll. Ryan Stoll’s two-run double put the Jays in front 3-1 in the fourth inning. The Crusaders scored three unearned runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. Blake Wiltgen limited Heelan to just two hits and one earned run. Austin Herbst led a nine-hit Gehlen attack with three hits. The Jays fall to 5-and-1 and play Sunday in the consolation bracket.

Tonalist kicked strongly in the final strides and edged Commissioner by a head to finish in 2:28:52. California Chrome was trying to become the first Triple-Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.

(CARROLL) — Gehlen Catholic rebounded from being handed their first loss of the season Saturday by Bishop Heelan, beating Kuemper Catholic 6-5 in eight innings and Storm Lake St. Mary’s 8-2 to finish fifth at the C-Y-O Tournament in Carroll Sunday afternoon. In the first game of the day in the consolation bracket semifinals, Gehlen scored five runs in the second inning on a two-run double by Lucas Hunt and a two-run single by Ty Kurth for a 5-0 lead. Kuemper responded with five runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-all, forcing extra innings. Hunt added another RBI hit in the eighth inning for the victory. Ryan Stoll, Brady Heying and Jarod Steffes handled the pitching chores. Heying got the win while Steffes earned a save. Steffes got the win against Storm Lake St. Mary’s, pitching the first five innings and giving up five hits with nine strike outs. Solomon Freking worked the final two innings to earn a save. Ty Kurth had three hits for the Jays and Ryan Stoll had a pair of doubles. Gehlen scored three runs in the second inning to seize control early. The Jays improve to 7-and-1 with Sunday’s victories and return to action Monday against South O’Brien. The JV/varsity doubleheader will be played in Granville at Vosburg Field starting at 6 p.m.

SAN ANTONIO – LeBron James scored 35 points on 14 of 22 shooting and had 10 rebounds as the Miami Heat beat San Antonio 98-96 to even the NBA Finals at a game apiece. Chris Bosh chipped in 18 points for the Heat, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:18 remaining. Tony Parker finished with 21 points and Tim Duncan added 18 for the Spurs, but they each missed two free throws during a nine second span and San Antonio ahead by just two midway through the fourth quarter.
