Sioux City Police Warn Of Deed Scam
(Sioux City) — The Sioux City Police Department has been made aware of a solicitation going on in the Siouxland area. Several residents have received notices offering the resident to obtain a copy of their deed and other information on the home for a $83 fee. The Better Business Bureau is aware of the practice and gives the company an “F” rating. Sioux City Police say copies of your deed can be obtained from the Woodbury County Recorder’s office for only fifty cents per page. Sioux City Police are asking residents to be cautious of the solicitation.
Grassley Concerned EPA Will Slow Down Ethanol Expansion
(Des Moines) — Senator Chuck Grassley says he is concerned the Environmental Protection Agency’s actions regarding the Renewable Fuel Standard may deter any future expansion in the ethanol industry, and in particular, new cellulosic ethanol plants like the one that started production in Emmetsburg, Iowa earlier this week. “Project Liberty” is a joint venture between South Dakota based ethanol company POET and a firm from the Netherlands. It is a new type of ethanol facility capable of producing up to 25 million gallons of ethanol from bio-mass products like corn cobs and corn stalks, rather than from the grain. Grassley says the E-P-A is wantintg to reduce the amount of ethanol to be produced, and will ultimately hurt the industy.

Marshalltown Veteran Erroneously Presented Silver Star Medal
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Sen. Tom Harkin says a Vietnam veteran was erroneously presented with a Silver Star medal after the Marshalltown man provided inaccurate documentation to the lawmaker’s staff.
Harkin said in a statement Friday that the medal presented to 64-year-old Dennis William Myers in June was not earned through service. He said the Navy recently provided Myers’ records to his office.
Military records show Myers served in the Navy in August 1968 and July 1972. But there are no records he received the Silver Star medal, one of the nation’s highest military honors.
Military groups questioned the documentation Myers submitted to Harkin’s office. Myers defended his record and said the paperwork came from a private California business that issues certificates for under $10.

Jury Finds Cop Killer Guilty
CLARION, Iowa (AP) – A jury has found a man guilty of first-degree murder in the death of a Rockwell City police officer last year.
The jury returned the verdict Friday in the case of 33-year-old Corey Trott. Jurors reached a consensus after less than two hours of deliberations in the trial.
Authorities say Trott shot 37-year-old Jamie Buenting during a standoff at Trott’s house in September 2013. Officers were trying to arrest Trott after an alleged assault. Buenting was near a house window when he was shot.
Trott did not testify during the trial, but jurors heard a taped interview where he expressed no regret in shooting a law enforcement officer.

Red Oak Couple Threatens Deputies
RED OAK, Iowa (AP) – A man and a woman have been accused of threatening to kill three Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies in southwest Iowa.
The Daily Nonpareil reports 25-year-old Mike Andrew Lawson of Red Oak and 24-year-old Justine Sheree Powers of College Springs were arrested Thursday on three counts each of threat of terrorism. Their attorneys did not respond immediately to messages left Friday.
Authorities say Lawson and Powers threatened the deputies on August 29th, though additional information has not been released. A criminal complaint says the pair also told one deputy they would blow up his house and hurt his family.
Lawson and Powers remain at the Montgomery County Jail on a $10,000 bond. A preliminary hearing for both is set for September 15th.
Police Break Up Prosititution Ring At Casino
BETTENDORF, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say they have arrested a dozen people in connection to a prostitution sting at the Isle of Capri Casino in Bettendorf.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says the arrests were made Wednesday and Thursday. They involved several agencies working in a joint undercover operation targeting prostitution in the area.
Officers posted advertisements on websites popular with individuals who engage in prostitution. Authorities say the suspects responded to the ads and met with undercover officers at the casino hotel.
An Isle of Capri spokeswoman says authorities requested their help for the sting and the casino volunteered a few rooms.
