KANSAS CITY — Salvador Perez hit a walkoff single and the Royals scored twice in the bottom of the 12th to pull out a 9-8 win over the Oakland Athletics in the American League Wild Card game at Kansas City. The Royals rallied from deficits of 7-3 and 8-7 before earning the right to face the Los Angeles Angels in the ALDS. The A’s were two outs away from victory until Eric Hosmer tripled and scored on an infield single by Christian Colon.

NATIONAL LEAGUE WILD CARD GAME: San Francisco 8, Pittsburgh 0
PITTSBURGH – Madison Bumgarner tossed a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and Brandon Crawford hit a grand slam as the San Francisco Giants ripped Pittsburgh 8-0 to win the National League Wild Card Game. Crawford went deep in the fourth inning before Brandon Belt added two hits and three RBIs. Next up for the Giants are the Nationals, with the first two games of the NL division series to be played in Washington.

EUGENE, Ore – Unranked Arizona blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter before Terris Jones-Grigsby scored on a one-yard run with 2:54 remaining to give the Wildcats a 31-24 victory over second-ranked Oregon in Eugene. Jones-Grigsby accounted for 210 total yards, netting 115 on 27 carries and making four receptions for 95 yards. Marcus Mariota (mar-ee-OH’-tah) threw for 276 yards and two scores but couldn’t prevent the 4-1 Ducks from losing to Arizona for the second straight year.

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers are 3-2 after building a 42-0 lead in a 42-10 blowout over the Minnesota Vikings. Aaron Rodgers threw for three touchdowns and Julius Peppers returned an interception 49 yards for another score. Eddie Lacy had a season-high 105 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries to help the 3-2 Packers win their second straight.

BALTIMORE – The Orioles set a team postseason record for runs while blasting Detroit 12-3 in Game 1 of the American League Division Series in Baltimore. Nelson Cruz and J.J. Hardy homered before the Birds scored eight times off four different pitches in the eighth inning. Cruz finished with three RBIs and was one of five Orioles with two hits.
ANAHEIM, Calif. – Kansas City has opened its American League Division Series by downing the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 on a solo homer by Mike Moustakas leading off the 11th inning. Royals starter Jason Vargas allowed two runs and three hits before Kansas City’s bullpen tossed one-hit ball over five shutout innings. Chris Iannetta (eye-ah-NET’-uh) and David Freese (freez) homered for the Angels.

(LE MARS) — The Le Mars Bulldogs won a defensive battle with Spencer 18-15 Friday night at Jim Lorenzen Field to halt a two-game losing streak and even their season record at 3-and-3 with a 2-and-1 mark in Class 3A District one play. Beau Ohm ran for 248 yards on 44 attempts, scoring on touchdowns runs of 71 and 10 yards to lead the Dogs to a much needed win. But it took Trevor Westhoff’s 14 yard touchdown on a pass from Koster Buss late in the third quarter to seal the outcome. That gave Le Mars an 18-7 lead going into the fourth quarter. Brady Plueger hauled in touchdown passes from Trey Hoofkin and Malik Rasch to score Spencer’s touchdowns. His 41 yard TD catch with 5:02 to play in the first half trimmed a 12-0 Bulldogs lead to 12-7 by halftime. A 59-yard TD grab with 5:49 to play in the game closed the Bulldogs’ lead to three. The Le Mars defense and a ball control offense made the lead hold up. The Bulldogs rolled up 311 yards on the ground and finished with 366 total yards for the game. Spencer used a balanced attack with 163 yards on the ground and 135 through the air on just 4-of-8 passing for 301 yards of total offense for the night. Le Mars travels to Sergeant Bluff-Luton next Friday for a freshman/varsity doubleheader. The freshman game begins at 4:45 with the varsity game beginning at 7:30. Coverage on KLEM begins at 7:15.
(HAWARDEN) — Porter Hummel scored three touchdowns and Trevor Ericson returned an interception 18 yards for a score to lead West Sioux to a 35-0 blitz of winless Gehlen Catholic Friday night at Hawarden in a Class A District 2 match-up. Hummel ran for 67 yards and scored on TD jaunts of 10, 2 and 1 yards. Mario Topete led the Falcons in rushing with 196 yards on 30 carries. Alberto O’Campo scored the other West Sioux touchdown on a nifty 19 yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. West Sioux led 15-0 at the half and sealed the Jays fate with a 17-play, eight minute drive to begin the second half with Hummel capping the 80-yard march with a quarterback sneak from the one yard line. Gehlen, which was held to just 132 yards of offense and four first downs, did drive to the ten yard line before losing the ball on downs with 11:55 to play in the game. The Jays fall to 0-and-6 for the season and 0-and-4 in district play. Gehlen celebrates homecoming next Friday against Sioux Central in a 7 p.m. kick-off at Jim Lorenzen Field.

Carpenter put the Redbirds ahead with a three-run double before scoring on Matt Holiday’s two-run homer.
WASHINGTON – Jake Peavy combined with five relievers on a six-hitter as the San Francisco Giants beat the Nationals 3-2 in Game 1 of the National League Division Series in Washington. Joe Panik and Brandon Belt each had two hits and an RBI to help the Giants build a 3-0 lead. The Nats were held to two hits until Bryce Harper and Asdrubal (as-DROO’-bul) Cabrera hit solo homers off Hunter Strickland in the seventh inning.
BALTIMORE – Pinch-hitter Delmon Young delivered a go-ahead, three-run double to cap the Baltimore Orioles’ four-run eighth in a 7-6 comeback win over Detroit. The Orioles enjoy a two-games-to-none lead in the American League Division Series after scoring 12 runs in the eighth inning of their victories. Nick Markakis (mahr-KAY’-kihs) opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the second for the Birds, but the Tigers put together a five-run third on homers by J.D. Martinez and Nick Castellanos (kas-tee-AH’-nohs) before the O’s rallied.
ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Kansas City Royals picked up their third straight extra-inning win as Eric Hosmer belted a two-run homer in the 11th inning of a 4-1 triumph over the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim. The outcome gives the Royals a 2-0 lead over the top-seeded Angels in the AL Division Series with a chance to wrap it up at home Sunday or Monday. Kansas City had just five hits until Lorenzo Cain hit a one-out single in the 11th and scored on Hosmer’s first career playoff home run.

STILLWATER, Okla. – Desmond Roland ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns and Tyreek Hill returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown Saturday to help Number 21 Oklahoma State defeat Iowa State 37-20.
The score was 6-6 when Roland scored as time expired in the first half. Hill’s kickoff return pushed the Cowboys’ lead to 20-6 in the opening seconds of the third quarter.
Sam B. Richardson passed for 200 yards and threw two touchdown passes to E.J. Bibbs. The Cyclones (1-4, 0-3) were held to 322 total yards in Stillwater.

LOS ANGELES – Matt Kemp belted a tiebreaking homer in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Dodgers past St. Louis 3-2 in Los Angeles. Kemp’s blast came a half-inning after Matt Carpenter knotted the score with a two-run shot. Dodgers starter Zack Greinke had to settle for a no-decision after holding the Cardinals to two hits and two walks while striking out seven in seven shutout innings.

Tigers starter David Price was working on a shutout until Nelson Cruz hit a two-run homer in the sixth. Bud Norris blanked the Tigers on two hits over 6 1/3 scoreless innings to help the Birds earn the right to host the first two games of the AL Championship Series against the Royals.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Alex Gordon hit a three-run double before Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer homered in Kansas City’s 8-3 rout of the Los Angeles Angels. The Royals swept the three-game series to reach the American League Championship Series for the first time since 1985, when they captured their lone championship.
