The Remsen St. Mary’s baseball team clinched a share of the War Eagle Conference title with a 5-2 win over previous WEC unbeaten Hinton on Friday night in Remsen.
The Hawks graduated a lot of talent off of last year’s team that lost just two games and went to the state tournament. After going 6-4 through their first 10 games, the Hawks have hit their stride and have won 10 of their last 11. Head coach Dean Harpenau says some adjustments were necessary, and they have paid off for his team.
Remsen St. Mary’s put themselves in a bad spot early allowing a pair of Hinton runs on some costly errors. The Hawks were able to respond later in the game with five runs in the fifth and three coming off the bat of freshman Jayze Bunkers who Coach Harpenau was happy to see respond to his error early in the game.
The Hawks were also able to get a strong outing from Dalton Klein who managed to allow just the two unearned runs in the first inning while striking out 10. Coach Harpenau says he appreciates the toughness Klein showed in working around the rough start.
The Hawks now sit at 16-5 overall and 10-0 in the War Eagle Conference with one game left to go in league play. That game is at Gehlen Catholic in another rivalry showdown between the Catholic schools in Plymouth County. Coach Harpenau says that game is another step toward achieving more goals that this team has.
Gehlen Catholic and Remsen St. Mary’s get started on Monday night at 7:30 PM at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Le Mars.
