LE MARS — The Gehlen Catholic Lady Jays broke into the win column Monday night with a 53-33 non-conference basketball victory over Storm Lake St. Mary’s at the Leroy Kellen Memorial gym. Junior Jolee Linden led the way with 12 points while Morgan Whitehead added 11 and Carli Murphy nine. Trisha and Katie Lenhart had 11 each for the Lady Panthers. Gehlen improves to 1-and-3 with the victory while S-L-S-M falls to 0-and-4. The Gehlen Catholic boys improved to 4-and-0 with an 84-60 win to complete a sweep of Storm Lake St. Mary’s. The Jays trailed 21-17 after the first quarter but had fought their way to a 40-32 halftime lead. A 19-2 run to begin the second half by Gehlen put the Jays in charge for the rest of the night. Alex Kellen led a balanced scoring attack for Gehlen with 23 points with Ryan stoll connecting on five three-pointers to finish with 18, Solomon Freking dropped in 14 and Jarod Steffes ten. Josh Demers had 28 for Storm Lake St. Mary’s. Gehlen plays at Unity Christian Tuesday night in their War Eagle Conference opener.

EMMETSBURG — Sophomore Bailey Naig sunk a pair of free throws with nine seconds to play and then Emmetsburg withstood a final three-point shot attempt by Le Mars to hold on for a 49-46 Lakes Conference girls basketball victory Tuesday night. The loss keeps Le Mars winless at 0-and-3. Ashton Connelly poured in 22 points for Emmetsburg while Alexa Naig dropped in 11. Janessa Milbrodt register a career-best 12 to lead Le Mars while Kassidy Rieken had ten. The Le Mars boys got 19 points from sophomore Trent Hilbrands to go along with 16 from Tyler Borchers and the Bulldogs routed Emmetsburg 69-34 in the Lakes Conference opener for both schools. Hilbrands connected on four consecutive three-pointers to lead the Bulldogs on an 18-2 run to start the second half, turning a 16-point halftime lead into a 32-point spread. Luke Jackson led the E-Hawks with nine. The win improves Le Mars to 2-and-0. Le Mars won both JV games, 32-18 in the girls contest and 36-16 in the boys game. The Bulldogs begin a four-game homestand Friday night when they host Western Christian before Sergeant Bluff-Luton arrives Saturday night.
ORANGE CITY — Unbeaten Gehlen Catholic opened defense of their War Eagle Conference championship won a year ago with a 54-47 win over Unity Christian Tuesday night in Orange City. Solomon Freking led the way to victory for the Jays with 19 points with Lucas Hunt adding 13 and Alex Kellen 11. The Jays overcame a slow start to improve to 5-and-0 for the season. Unity Christian falls to 0-and-2 in the War Eagle Conference race. The second-rated (2A) Unity Christian girls held Gehlen Catholic to two second half points and the Lady Knights cruised to a 78-15 War Eagle Conference win over the Lady Jays Tuesday night. Chanda Zomermaand and Kassidy DeJong each had 16 points for Unity and Alyssa Fedders added 15. Morgan Whitehead had eight for Gehlen Catholic. The Knights led 44-13 at halftime and outscored Gehlen 34-2 over the final two quarters. Gehlen Catholic entertains Remsen-Union Friday at the Leroy Kellen Memorial gym in a War Eagle Conference doubleheader.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Iowa’s Brandon Scherff has won the Outland Trophy, given to the nation’s outstanding interior lineman.
The offensive tackle was presented with the award Thursday night during the 24th College Football Awards Show at Disney World.
Scherff was the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2014. He was also selected first-team All-Big Ten for the second consecutive year, becoming the first Hawkeyes player to do that since Shaun Prater.
Scherff was selected over finalists Malcolm Brown of Texas and Reese Dismukes of Auburn.

(LE MARS) — Senior Pete Meis had a career-high 16 points to key a 65-46 Le Mars win over Western Christian Friday night, ending a 29-game winning streak for the defending 2A State champion Wolfpack. The Bulldogs had four double-figure scorers Friday night, led by Tyler Paulson’s 20 points. Paulson set the tone early with five three-point baskets in the first half to lead Le Mars to a 37-21 halftime advantage. Tyler Borchers finished with 15 points before fouling out and Caleb Cline added 10, connecting on a trio of buckets behind the three-point arc. All-Stater Josh Van Lingen led Western with 14 points before he fouled out with 2:32 to play. Jesse Jansma scored ten off the bench for the Wolfpack. The win improves Le Mars’ record to 3-and-0 and 2-and-0 in the Lakes Conference while Western Christian slips to 2-and-1 for the season and 1-and-1 in the conference.
The top-rated Western Christian girls went on a 14-0 run in the third quarter to extend a 29-20 lead to 43-20 and the unbeaten Wolfpack cruised to a 64-32 Lakes Conference victory at Le Mars Friday. Western outscored Le Mars 22-3 in the third quarter and 35-13 after halftime to shake free of a scrappy effort by the out-manned Lady Bulldogs. The defending three-time 2A State champs got 16 points from Kenzie Bousema and 11 from freshman Ashtyn Veerbeek. Wolfpack coach Bill Harmsen used his depth to always keep a fresh set of five on the floor, rotating ten girls in and out of the line-up throughout the contest as Western Christian improved to 4-and-0 for the season and 2-and-0 in the Lakes Conference. Kassidy Rieken led the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points and Holly Schneider added six. Le Mars falls to 0-and-4 for the season and 0-and-2 in league play.
Le Mars hosts Sergeant Bluff-Luton Saturday night. The girls/boys doubleheader will be carried on KLEM starting at 5:45.
(LE MARS) — Gehlen Catholic swept a War Eagle Conference basketball doubleheader from Remsen-Union Friday night in Le Mars. The Gehlen girls avenged a five-point loss at Remsen ten days ago with a 40-36 win Friday night to improve to 1-and-1 in the War Eagle conference and 2-and-4 for the season. The Lady Jays dominated in the paint, getting a career-best 22-point performance from senior Morgan Whitehead while another senior, Carli Murphy added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Jays. Megan Maas had 16 points for the Lady Rockets. The game was close throughout with the Rockets leading by two after a quarter, Gehlen went up by four at halftime and took a two-point advantage into the final quarter. It was still a two-point game going into the final minute. Remsen-Union falls to 3-and-3 for the year and 0-and-2 in the W-E-C.
The Gehlen boys improved to 6-and-0 with an 83-40 rout of the Remsen-Union Rockets, ten days after beating R-U by 32 in Remsen. The defending War Eagle Conference champion Jays are off to a 2-and-0 start in this year’s league race. Solomon Freking had 24 points and Alex Kellen 20 to lead Gehlen Friday night. Ryan Stoll added 10. Nick Schroeder had 12 for the Rockets and Chris Miksch dropped in 11. Remsen-Union is now 0-and-5 for the season and winless in two league contests.
Gehlen Catholic plays host to Hinton Tuesday night at the Leroy Kellen Memorial gym in their last home stop before the holiday break.

(LE MARS) — Le Mars senior Holly Schneider turned in an inspiring performance Saturday night to lead her team back from a 14-point first half deficit to a 55-48 victory over Sergeant Bluff-Luton as the Lady Bulldogs recorded their first win of the season. Schneider probably played the best game of her career, scoring a career-best 23 points and helping defensively against standout Amber Schubert, holding her to 14 points. She averages 27.1 a game. Schneider’s leadership also included handling the ball against the Warriors’ press and inspiring her teammates to not give up despite a frustrating 6-for-31 (19%) first half shooting performance by the Dogs that led to a 25-11 deficit with three-and-a-half minutes to play in the second quarter. Le Mars took advantage of a third foul on Schubert just before halftime to launch a 17-3 surge that tied the game at 28-all early in the third quarter. Le Mars took their first lead on freshman Jen Schneider’s free throw with 1:21 to play in the third period and they never trailed again. The Lady Bulldogs connected on 23-of-36 foul shots, including 14-of-21 in the fourth quarter to fend off a late S-B-L charge. The win improves Le Mars to 1-and-4 for the season.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton handed the Le Mars boys their first loss of the season, 67-62, Saturday night to drop the Bulldogs to 3-and-1. Still riding the emotions of a big Friday night win over Western Christian, Le Mars just never could get in sync against the Warriors. S-B-L closed the first half on a 14-4 run to erase a 17-10 deficit and led 24-21 at halftime. The Bulldogs would play catch-up for the rest of the night! The Warriors hustled their way to an 11-point lead midway through the third quarter and although the Dogs battled back to within four points with 20 seconds to play, the deficit proved to be too much to overcome to avoid the upset. Sergeant Bluff-Luton hit 16-of-22 foul shots in the fourth quarter to keep the Bulldogs at bay. Sophomore Chris Kroll was 9-for-10 from the foul line and finished with 21 points for the Warriors. Tyler Paulsen led Le Mars with 17 points, Tyler Borchers added 16 and Trent Hilbrands had 14. The win halted a three-game losing streak for S-B-L as they improve to 2-and-4. Le Mars did win both JV games Saturday, 43-40 in the girls contest and 48-33 in the boys game.
Le Mars continues their four-game home stand Tuesday against Spencer.

NEW YORK – Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota has come away with the Heisman Trophy as college football’s top player, beating out Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon and Alabama receiver Amari Cooper. Mariota received the second-highest percentage of possible points in Heisman history, topped only by Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith in 2006. He is the first Ducks player to win the trophy after setting a Pac-12 mark this season with 53 total touchdowns, including a school-record 38 via pass, 14 keepers and one TD reception.
BALTIMORE – Make it 13 straight wins for Navy over Army in college football. Quarterback Keenan Reynolds ran for 100 yards on 26 carries and threw a touchdown pass as the Middies downed the Cadets 17-10. Navy led 10-7 before Reynolds scored from the 1 with 12:07 left.
