Valentine’s Day Means Economic Boost To Local Businesses

(Le Mars) — Today is Valentine’s Day, a day when people show their affection for those they love.  Cards, chocolates, flowers and jewelry are popular items that are purchased and presented to others. For many Le Mars businesses, Valentine’s Day means an economic boost.  Karen Nelson of the Le Mars Flower Shop says they prepare for Valentine’s Day a week prior to February 14th.

Roses are also the most popular floral arrangement at the HyVee Supermarket.  Stacy McDermott is the HyVee floral department manager.

However, not every woman enjoys roses, according to Nelson.

Valentine’s Day is huge for both the Le Mars Flower Shop and for HyVee. Nelson says only Mother’s Day is a better day for floral sales than Valentine’s Day.

It’s not just flowers that are big time sellers for Valentine’s Day, but greeting cards, gifts and sweets also generate additional income.
