(Undated) — Two people from Plymouth County have been rewarded with free gasoline for their good deeds.  Liz Less of Akron and Mark Juhl of Remsen were nominated through the Cenex’s Tanks of Thanks program.  Both will receive a $50 gift card that can be redeemed at any Cenex retail location.  The “Tanks of Thanks” program encourages people performing good deeds within their communities, and rewards those making the places we live a little bit better.  To date, “Tanks of Thanks” has rewarded nearly 480 Iowa residents with free gas and has recognized more than 15,700 people across the country. Liz Less is a photographer, known for her ability to capture memorable moments.  When a friend was told their child would only live a short time after birth, Less offered to take pictures of the parents and their child, free of charge. On the day of the child’s birth, Less was there, camera in hand, to capture the emotional day.

Warm Weather Allows Barges To Navigate Mississippi River

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) – Warm weather has benefited barge companies in the Dubuque area as they have been able to efficiently operate in the Mississippi River’s ice-free water.
Gary Kilburg, assistant lockmaster at Lock and Dam No. 11, says the absence of ice on the river is allowing barge traffic to pass through the lock with greater efficiency than usual.
Companies are taking advantage of the opportunity to use the river longer than usual.
Newt Marine’s general manager, Marcus Murphy, said that about 98 percent of the company’s business is dependent on river traffic. He said that weather conditions in November and early December will allow the company to continue assisting barges at least one week later this year compared to last year.
Murphy says consistent water levels have helped as well.
