UNDATED — Kansas is the new No. 1 team in The Associated Press men’s basketball poll, climbing to the top following Michigan State’s loss last week. The Jayhawks picked up 44 first-place votes, while second-ranked Oklahoma captured the remaining 21. Kansas is the fourth school to be ranked No. 1 this season, joining North Carolina, Kentucky and Michigan State. Maryland is No. 3, followed by Virginia and Michigan State. North Carolina, Arizona, Providence, Kentucky and Xavier round out the top 10. Iowa State slipped to 13th after sitting 11th a week ago and Iowa broke into the ratings at No. 19 this week after wins over then No. 1 Michigan State and No. 14 Purdue last week.
Connecticut remains the top team in the AP women’s poll after improving to 11-0. Second-ranked South Carolina is followed by Notre Dame, Texas and Ohio State.
LAWRENCE, Kan. — Perry Ellis had 27 points and 13 rebounds as the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks outlasted No. 2 Oklahoma 109-106 in triple-overtime. Devonte Graham provided 20 points, including the go-ahead free throw in the third overtime. Wayne Selden’s 21 points helped Kansas improve to 13-1 this season. Buddy Hield poured in a career-high 46 points for Oklahoma but he made two crucial turnovers in the final extra session and missed a potential tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.

LE MARS — Akron-Westfield used a 15-2 second half run to break open a tight game and the Westerners went on to post a 39-30 win over the Gehlen Catholic girls basketball team Tuesday night at the Ronald Fox Memorial gym in Le Mars. The game was a non-conference match-up and completed a season sweep by A-W in the home-and-home schedule for both. Ann Hedlund led a balanced Westerner scoring attack with 9 points with Danika Tindall and freshman Brooke Koele adding 8 each and Bailey Davis had 7. Jaci Alesch had 12 for Gehlen to lead all scorers. Akron-Westfield improves to 7-and-4 heading into a War Eagle Conference home date against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Friday. Gehlen travels to Harris-Lake Park for a conference match-up with the Wolves Friday. The Lady Jays fall to 1-and-7 with the loss on Tuesday.
The Gehlen Catholic boys hit 60% of their shots in the first quarter and opened up a 22-7 lead after the first eight minutes as the Jays turned back Akron-Westfield for the 13th straight time in the series, 66-51. It was Gehlen’s fourth win in their last six games and improved their record to 4-and-4 heading into the Friday W-E-C match-up at Harris-Lake Park. Cooper Davis scored a career-best 13 points off the bench Tuesday night to pace the Jays with Carson Kneip and Roman Freking dropping in 11 each. Caleb Colt scored 21 for Akron-Westfield. The Westerners fall to 3-and-7.
LE MARS — Le Mars won both ends of a Lakes Conference basketball doubleheader Tuesday night at the Bulldogs’ new gym. Le Mars won the girls game 61-15 to improve to 4-and-5 for the season and 2-and-3 in league play. Freshman Madison Dreckman led the Lady Bulldogs with 20 points, Jen Schneider had 11 and Katrina Engebretson 10. Le Mars held the Tornadoes to four points in the second half.
The Le Mars boys beat Storm Lake 74-48 as junior Trent Hilbrands poured in 34 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-and-2 Lakes Conference mark and a 4-and-3 season record. Gabe Eckstaine added 12. Parker Lange had 17 for the Tornadoes.
The Le Mars boys play Sioux City East Thursday in the C-N-O-S Classic at the Tyson Events Center at 7:15. The Le Mars girls meet Dakota Valley Saturday morning at 10:30 in the C-N-O-S Classic. Spirit Lake calls on Le Mars Friday night in a Lakes Conference double dip at the Bulldogs’ new gym.

SIOUX CITY — The Sioux City East boys rallied from a 38-30 halftime deficit to a 67-59 win over the Le Mars Bulldogs Thursday night in one of five games played at the Tyson Events Center in the C-N-O-S Classic. The Black Raiders opened the second half with a 16-3 run to take the lead for good five minutes into the third quarter. Le Mars’ Trent Hilbrands led all scorers with 33 points with Will Pottebaum adding 13. Connor Murrell had 29 for East and Van Rees dropped in 16. Le Mars falls to 4-and-4 for the season while Sioux City East improves to 8-and-2.

LE MARS — The Le Mars Lady Bulldogs scored the final nine points of the game to rally from a 34-33 deficit to a 42-34 upset win over No. 5 (3A) Spirit Lake in Lakes Conference basketball action Friday night at the Bulldogs new gym. The victory ended a 20-game losing streak by Le Mars against Spirit Lake. Senior Cassidy Utesch keyed the win with a career-best 14 points. Her three-point play with a little over two minutes to play started the 9-0 game-ending run. She also added a pair of free throws with 50.6 seconds to play before Katrina Engebretson’s break away lay-up capped the scoring in the closing seconds. Madison Dreckman added 10 for the Lady Bulldogs, who improve to 5-and-5 for the season and 3-and-3 in league play. Engebretson finished with nine for Le Mars. Freshman Anna Brown had 12 for Spirit Lake as the Indians fall to 7-and-2 for the season.
The Spirit Lake boys ran their record to 8-and-2 and 5-and-1 in Lakes Conference play with a 74-61 victory at Le Mars Friday night. The Indians closed the first half on a 13-0 run to erase a 29-27 deficit and extended their 40-29 halftime lead to 49-31 2 1/2 minutes into the second half. Le Mars rallied to within seven at 56-49 with seven minutes to play in the game before the Indians, led by senior Billy Brown’s 17 second half points, secured the 13-point victory. Brown finished with a game-high 30 points. Iowa recruit, Ryan Kriener finished with 19 and Jake Heitritter had 16 for Spirit Lake. Trent Hilbrands led the Bulldogs with 27 points with James Brownmiller and Dylan Harms registering career highs with 12 and 9 points respectively. Le Mars slips to 4-and-5 for the season and 3-and-3 in the Lakes Conference.

SIOUX CITY — Dakota Valley took advantage of a cold shooting first half by the Le Mars Lady Bulldogs Saturday morning to hand the Dogs a 52-39 setback at the C-N-O-S Classic at the Tyson Events Center. The Panthers led 20-13 at halftime after Le Mars connected on just 4-of-19 first half shots. The Lady Bulldogs struggled to get back in the game for the rest of the contest. Madison Dreckman had 19 points for Le Mars and Sidney Baumgartner added 11. Dakota Valley had three in double figures. The Panthers improve to 6-and-2 while Le Mars drops to 5-and-6. The Lady Bulldogs are off until traveling to Orange City next Thursday to play M-O-C/Floyd Valley.

MINNEAPOLIS – Blair Walsh missed a 27-yard field goal with 22 seconds left, allowing the Seattle Seahawks to walk away with a 10-9 triumph at Minnesota in the NFC wild-card game. The Vikings blew a 9-0 lead in the fourth quarter but moved deep into Seahawks territory before Walsh missed badly on a chip shot. Steven Hauschka’s 46-yard kick put Seattle ahead 10-9 with 8:04 left.
LANDOVER, Md. – The Green Bay Packers erased deficits of 11-0 and 18-17 before beating Washington 35-18 in an NFC wild-card game. James Starks and Eddie Lacy rushed for touchdowns after Kirk Cousins’ three-yard TD run and an extra point put the Redskins ahead by one in the third quarter. Aaron Rodgers threw for a pair of first-half touchdown and was 21 of 36 for 210 yards and no interceptions.
