Primary Election Scheduled For June 7th
(Le Mars) — The Primary Election is June 7, 2016. The final day to register to vote for the June 7, 2016 Primary Election is Friday, May 27th 2016 by 5 pm in the Plymouth County Courthouse in the Auditor’s office. If you are not a registered voter before Friday, May 27th, 2016, then you will be required to complete the Election Day Registration (EDR) process by showing proof of identity
and proof of residence in order to vote for the Primary Election.
Registration forms can be obtained in person from the Plymouth County Auditor’s office at 215 4th Ave. SE, Le Mars from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday, or the Voter registration form can be downloaded at www.co.plymouth.ia.us under Online Services and then County Forms and mailed to the Auditor’s office.

Sioux City Council To Decide On Penalties For Failure To Shovel Snow
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – Sioux City Council members on Monday are scheduled to consider a proposal to penalize property owners an extra 25 percent on unpaid city fees for removing snow from sidewalks.
The penalties would be levied on the unpaid fees added to the parcels’ property taxes.
City code requires owners to clear sidewalks within 12 hours after snow or ice has stopped falling. Noncompliance can result in a civil citation. If a sidewalk isn’t cleared after a 24-hour shovel notice is posted, a city contractor clears the sidewalk and the city bills the property owner for those costs.

Rembrandt Foods To Have Cage-Free Chicken Farm
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – One of the nation’s largest egg producers says it plans to build a new cage-free egg-laying farm in eastern South Dakota that will house 3 million hens.
Rembrandt Foods will build the facility in Lake Preston, South Dakota. Construction is expected to begin this year and it will be ready for hens next year.
Spirit Lake, Iowa-based Rembrandt Foods supplies egg products to food manufacturers, food service providers, restaurant chains and retail grocers. It announced plans to increase the number of its hens housed in cage-free barns last year.
Rembrandt president Dave Rettig says growing consumer demand for cage-free eggs has pushed more than 100 food companies including Walmart and McDonalds to switch to cage-free eggs in the next decade.
Rembrandt has facilities in Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota and Alabama.
Prestage Farms Seeking Environmental Permit For Pork Processing Facility
MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) – Prestage Foods is working to obtain the environmental permits it needs to build a $240 million pork processing plant in Mason City.
The company will need to secure final approval from the city and environmental regulators before it can build the plant.
The environmental review process will address how much water the plant will need, how its wastewater would be treated and what effect it might have on air quality.
Many of the roughly 200 people who attended a hearing on the project earlier this month urged city officials to reject it.
The City Council is planning hearings on April 21 and May 3 before deciding whether to approve the development agreement with Prestage.
The company hopes to have the plant operational by mid-2018.

Denison Resident Wants To Know The Names Of Volunteers At Hospital
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa Public Information Board is scheduled to decide whether to take action against a county hospital for not releasing the names of its volunteers.
Denison resident Richard Knowles has been seeking the volunteer driver records from Crawford County Memorial Hospital so he can learn whether any of the people have criminal histories.
The hospital and its foundation say the information shouldn’t be considered a public record because the volunteer workers are not paid. Iowa’s open record law mandates the release of the name and compensation of government employees.
The information board deputy director has recommended the board find “probable cause” in the case. If the board agrees in its vote Thursday, the next step could be a hearing before an administrative law judge.

Nurse Accused Of Having Sexual Relations With Patient
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A 56-year-old nurse has been accused of having a sexual relationship with a woman he was caring for. Police started investigating the relationship last month after the administrator of a rehabilitation facility reported it.
The facility administrator told police that she didn’t think the woman was mentally capable of consenting to sex because of her mental health issues.
Police say the sexual relationship began in December while the woman was staying at the care facility. The relationship continued after the woman was discharged.
The nurse has been arrested on suspicion of abusing a dependent adult. It wasn’t immediately clear if he would face additional charges.
