Sioux Falls Homicide Suspect Apprehended
(Sioux Falls) – This morning law enforcement officials from southeast Wyoming located and apprehended Sioux Falls homicide suspect (21-year-old) Jared Stone after a pursuit through parts of western Nebraska and southeastern Wyoming. No one was injured in his apprehension. Stone was in Le Mars early Tuesday morning. The Le Mars police and Plymouth County Sherriff’s deputies apprehended (26 year old) La Chara Bordeaux at the Le Mars truck stop. Bordeaux is in custody at the Plymouth County jail. She is accused of being an accomplice of Jared Stone.
Local Rivers Near Flooding Level
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – Heavy rainfall over the past two days in northwest Iowa has swollen area rivers with storm runoff.
The National Weather Services has issued flood warnings for the Big Sioux, Little Sioux and Ocheyedan (oh-CHEE’-duhn) rivers. Mike Gillespie Hydrologist with the national weather services of Sioux Falls, says it is likely some minor flooding will take place along both the Big Sioux and Little Sioux Rivers.
As for the Floyd River, Gillespie doesn’t believe it will crest.
Gillespie says there is some flooding already taking place. Additional flooding may depend on future weather forecasts.
The weather service official says the Big Sioux between Akron and Hawarden may crest sometime this weekend.
The Little Sioux is forecast to reach 11 feet by Friday, a foot above flood stage, flooding the city park in Spencer.
Absentee Ballots For June Primary Election Now Available
(Le Mars) -Absentee ballots for the June 7 Primary Election are available as of today (Thursday- April 28th) in the Auditor’s Office at the Plymouth County Courthouse during regular business hours of 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday to vote in person. Absentee ballots may be cast in the Auditor’s office until Monday, June 6th until 5 pm.Absentee ballots to be mailed to voters must be requested in writing. Forms are available at the Plymouth County Auditor’s Office or at www.co.plymouth.ia.us under Online Services and then County Forms. Absentee ballot request forms can be mailed to the Auditor’s office at 215 4th Ave. SE, Le Mars, IA 51031. Voters may contact the Auditor’s office and an absentee ballot request form can be mailed to a voter.
Voters requesting an absentee ballot to be mailed to them must have the request form to the Auditor’s office no later than 5 pm on Friday, June 3rd, as that is the last day absentee ballots can be mailed out to voters. The Auditor’s office provides the postage for all absentee ballots returned by mail. Ballots must be postmarked prior to midnight, June 6th, 2016 (The day prior to the election), or can be delivered to the Auditor’s office before the polls close at 9:00 pm on June 7, Election Day.
If you wish to absentee vote in the Auditor’s office Tuesday, May 31st through Monday, June 6th and are not registered to vote, you will be required to complete the Election Day Registration process at the Auditor’s Office prior to casting your absentee ballot. The EDR voter registration process requires valid photo identification, and one form of proof of Plymouth County residency. Examples of proof of residency can be a valid Iowa drivers license with your current Plymouth County address, a utility bill, cell phone bill, residential lease, bank statement, paycheck, government check, vehicle registration, or a tax assessment. Swans Released at Iowa Lake
CORNING, Iowa (AP) – Two trumpeter swans are set to be released at a southwest Iowa lake.
Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say they will release the rare, all-white birds Thursday at Lake Icaria Recreation Area, near Corning. The release is planned for 1 p.m. on the north side of the lake, and those who attend will be able touch and view the swans that weigh up to 32 pounds with an 8 foot wingspan.Trumpeter swans were once common in Iowa but left the state by the late 1880’s. The swans being released Thursday are a part of the department’s effort to restore the bird’s population in the state. Officials say that only 69 trumpeter swans remained in the continental U.S. by the early 1930’s.
Lawmakers Agree On Oversight Of Boarding Schools
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa lawmakers have agreed on a bill that would add state oversight of private boarding schools but also protect religious curriculum at such institutions and other educational facilities.
A special legislative committee agreed Thursday on legislation that would add regulatory oversight of children’s residential facilities. The bill heads to the Democratic-controlled Senate and GOP-majority House for formal votes.
There was initial disagreement over language proposed by Republicans that would exempt religious facilities from more rigid oversight regarding educational curriculum. Democrats said it would create a loophole, while Republicans expressed concern at state authority over religious curriculum.
Lawmakers compromised on a bill that keeps some protection on religious curriculum but also adds more oversight.
The bill comes amid an investigation into abuse allegations at a now-closed boarding school in Keokuk.
