Gehlen Catholic School Announces Valedictorian and Salutatorian
Gehlen Catholic School is pleased to announce their Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the Class of 2016.
The 2016 Valedictorian is Megan Kellen, the daughter of Tom and Laurie Kellen of
Alton, and the Salutatorian was grnated to Josie Galles, the daughter of Brad
Galles and Kari Langel, both of LeMars.

Gov. Branstad Releases Tax Returns
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Tax returns for Gov. Terry Branstad and his wife show they earned $185,249 in 2015 and made sizable charity donations.
Branstad’s 48-page tax return was made available to the media Friday at the Iowa Capitol. The documents show the governor made a little over $31,000 in donations to Iowa charities, which is well over the average of about $4,000 in donations for his income level.
The donations, which include money for nine Catholic charities, helped lower Branstad’s federal income tax rate to 10.18 percent, compared to the average rate of 13.89 percent.
Branstad was paid $127,734 for serving as governor. He paid $18,859 in federal taxes and will be refunded $11,784.
Waterloo Man Sentenced to 50 Years In Prison For Murder
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) – A Waterloo man who pleaded guilty to killing his former girlfriend has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.
38-year-old Shaun Hogan received his prison sentence Friday. He pleaded guilty in March to second-degree murder for the July 2014 death of 29-year-old Crystal Gaffney.
He was initially charged with first-degree murder but pleaded guilty to the reduced charge in a plea deal with prosecutors.
Gaffney’s body was found in the middle of a road near Walker in Linn County. An autopsy determined she died of head trauma.
