(Sioux City) — Congressman Steve King and his Republican Primary challenger Rick
Bertrand (BER-trund) met Friday night in their only face-to-face forum of the
campaign. Bertrand, a 46-year-old state senator from Sioux City, presented himself
as a “fresh face” and “new blood” who were serve no more than 10 years in congress.
King stressed the value of his “institional knowledge” after serving 14 years in
the House.

Bertrand says before the Iowa Caucuses, King missed a “golden opportunity” to
publicly pressure Ted Cruz to embrace the federal ethanol production mandate. King
said he has a “long record in support of renewable fuels,” but King says it would
have been “ridiculous” to stand on the same stage with Cruz and criticize him.

Bertrand suggested King had abandoned the R-F-S in favor of a “non-Iowa agenda.”
Bertrand used his closing statement to mention a tweet King sent on Caucus night
that relayed a C-N-N story about one of Cruz’s rivals.

Last night’s hour-long forum was co-sponsored by K-S-C-J Radio, K-T-I-V Television
and The Sioux City Journal.

SPENCER, Iowa (AP) – A company that makes hydraulic pumps and motors says it will
lay off 70 workers in Spencer over the next year.
The Eaton Corporation says 23 employees will be laid off within the next couple of
months and the remainder will be let go within the next year. The employees were
notified Thursday. Eaton’s Spencer facility currently employs about 180 people who
make pumps and motors for mobile and industrial use.
Officials say the cuts are a result of a full year of declining markets in 2015
for the company and the industry in general. They see the trend continuing this
year.
The Dublin, Ireland-based company has about 97,000 employees worldwide and sells
products in over 175 countries.

(Le Mars) — Now that school has been dismissed for the summer, the Iowa Highway
Patrol, and other local law enforcement agencies want motorists to remember that
several bicycles will be sharing the road. Trooper Vince Kurtz of the Iowa Highway
Patrol says bicycle safety goes both for the motorist, as well as for the
bicyclist.

Kurtz suggests parents visit with thier children to remind them to ride their bikes
safely.

Kurtz says unfortunately, bicycle and vehicle accidents become an all too familiar
occurance during the summer months. Kurtz says it is not just young children
riding their bikes in town, but motorists should also be aware of possible
accidents with bicycles on the county and state roads.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A Davenport woman is now facing an attempted murder charge
after authorities said she tried to flush her newborn down a toilet last month and

the child May 8 in a bathroom at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Police say Hautzenrader tried to flush the baby then put it in a pillowcase
and left it in a trash can. A hospital employee found the newborn alive.
The new charge is in addition to a child endangerment charge.
