Secondary Roads Department To Close Pioneer Avenue

(Le Mars) — Plymouth County Secondary Roads Department has announced they will be
closing Pioneer Avenue between 110th Street to 100th Street beginning today, and
continuing through June 16th. The road is closed to install a culvert pipe.

 

Fire Department Issues Monthly Report

(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department responded to a total of 35
calls during the month of May. The break down includes: 12 fire calls, 6 rescue
calls, ten investigations, two times the fire department was called to offer the
Merrill Fire Department mutual aid, and there were five requests for services. Fire
chief Dave Schipper says all the self-contained breathing apparatus were flow
tested and passed. This is done on an annual basis for safety and insurance
requirements. All members of the Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department completed a
mandated OSHA hazardous materials operations refresher course. Fire Chief Dave
Schipper reports that fire fighter Jordon Cave resigned from the department after
serving ten years.

 

Today Is Primary Election Day

(Le Mars) — As mentioned, today is Primary election day. Plymouth County
republicans will decide upon two candidates seeking the position of District 5 on
the Plymouth County Board of Supervisors. Gary Horton of Akron and Dan Smith of
Merrill are both seeking the position that will be vacated by Jim Henrich.
Plymouth County republicans will also decide who should be the republican candidate
in the general election to run for the Iowa 4th District Congressional seat. State
Senator Rick Bertrand of Sioux City is challenging seven term Congressman Steve
King of Kiron. Democrats will decide who should be the Democratic candidate that
will face long time U-S Senator Chuck Grassley. There are four candidates seeeking
the position. Former Lt. Governor and Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Patty Judge,
State Senator Rob Hogg, Former State Legislator Bob Krause, and Tom Fiegen.

 

Precinct Voting Locations

(Le Mars) — Plymouth County voters wanting to cast their votes for the primary
election can go to their regular voting location. Officials with the Plymouth
County Auditor’s office indicate the polls will open at 7:00 a.m. and will remain
open until 9:00 p.m. Voters will report to their respective polling place and
inform the volunteers as to which political party you want to vote. Voters do have
the opportunity if already pre-registered to change party affiliation at the polls.
If you are not registered to vote, you will need to bring along two forms of
identification, along with a bank statement, utilities bill, or some other form of
mail indicating your home address.

Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Here is the list of polling places:
Listen closely to your voting location.

Precinct #1 which includes Portland township and the town of Akron will vote at the
Akron Public Library.

Precinct #2 which is a new precinct, includes the townships on the eastern edge of
Plymouth County featuring Meadow…Remsen…Henry…and Garfield but excludes the towns
of Remsen and Kingsley will vote at the American Bank in Remsen.

Precinct #3 includes Elgin and America townships as well as the communities of
Struble and Seney, but it excludes Le Mars. Voting will occur at the Courthouse Annex.

Precinct #4 which is also a new precinct has Preston…Grant…Johnson…and Washington
townships and the communities of Craig and Brunsville. The Brunsville Legion Hall
will serve as the voting location.

Precinct #5 includes the townships of Fredonia and Marion as well as the towns of
Oyens and Remsen. Voting will occur at the Remsen Public Library.

Precinct #6 consists of the townships of Westfield and Sioux along with the town of
Westfield. Voting will be at the Westfield Community Center.

Precinct #7 has Liberty…Plymouth…and Stanton townships along with the town of
Merrill and voters will need to go to the Kissinger Community Center.

Precinct #8, located in the southwestern corner of the county involves Hancock and
Perry townships, along with portions of Sioux City will vote at the Perry township
Hall.

Precinct #9 includes the townships of Hungerford and Lincoln and also includes the
town of Hinton. The Hinton Community Center will serve as the voting place.

Precinct #10 is Union and Elkhorn townships along with the town of Kingsley.
Voting will take place at the Kingsley Community Center.

And finally, Precincts 11,12, and 13 includes the city of Le Mars and all voting
will be conducted at the Le Mars Convention Center, lower level. Even though
precincts 11, 12, and 13 includes Le Mars, voters will want to check the new
boundaries to see if they have been moved to a different precinct.

 

Supervisors Scheduled To Meet Today

(Le Mars) — Plymouth County Board of Supervisors will convene at the County
Courthouse Board Room for their weekly meeting today. The county supervisors will
hear an update on Mike’s Saloon regarding its septic violations. The county
governing board is expected to approve a transfer resolution dealing with fiscal
Year 2015-2016, as well as a transfer resolution with fiscal year 2016-2017. The
county supervisors are expected to approve a budget appropriation resolution, as
well as approve deputies salaries. The supervisors are expected to approve a
liquor license for Tucker Hill Vineyards, and a fireworks permit for Carl Harrison.
The county supervisors also have on their agenda to review and approve business
property tax credit applications. Spencer Hansen will appear before the
supervisors seeking approval on Hansen Dunn Acres Addition, a minor subdivision in
Section 31 in Hungerford Township. County engineer Tom Rohe, will also appear
before the county supervisors to offer an update on the various county road
construction projects.

 

Le Mars City Council To Meet At Council Chambers At Noon

(Le Mars) — The Le Mars City Council is scheduled to meet today at noon. The city
council has a short agenda for their meeting, having only one action item. That
item is the awarding of a contract for the 2016 Water Main Improvement project.
Mike Donlin, the chairman of the Le Mars Area Betterment Foundation is scheduled to
offer the city council an update on the Community Betterment Project.

 

 

Housing And Neighborhoods To Be Discussed At Community Planning Meeting

(Le Mars) — This afternoon at the Willow Creek Golf Course banquet hall beginning
at 5:15 p.m. will be the second of the Community Project meetings hosted by the
city of Le Mars and SIMPCO. Kirk Lehmann of Simpco says today’s meeting will focus
on housing issues and neighborhoods.

Everyone is welcome to attend today’s meeting. Lehmann says he hopes that
contractors, developers, real estate agents, city officials, and financial lenders
make an effort to attend the meeting. Lehmann says he is excited about tonight’s
meeting.

 

 

 

Vogel Paints To Hold Groundbreaking Ceremony For New Addition

(Orange City) — Vogel Paints, Incorporated will break ground today on a 91,000
square foot addition to its powder coatings manufacturing plant. The ground
breaking ceremony will take place at 4:00 p.m. at the northwest corner of the Vogel
Paint campus, located at 1019 Arizona Street southwest in Orange City. The
expansion will more than double the size of the manufacturing plant, but it will
also allow the company to significantly expand its output capacity in the years to
come. The investment for the Peridium Powder Coating plant expansion is valued at
an estimated $12.5 million, plus an additional $6.1 million of plant equipment on
order, with completion anticipated in the spring of 2017. The completed project is
estimated to create nearly 50 jobs at Vogel Paints. The expansion of the Peridium
Powder Coating plant is the first phase of Vogel Paint’s five-year, $29.3 million
expansion plan for its operation located at the company’s headquarters in Orange
City. The Iowa Economic Development Authority board has awarded tax benefits to
Vogel Paints for its expansion project.
