Heat Wave Hits Le Mars

(Le Mars) — With today and tomorrow’s temperatures expected to be in the mid to
upper 90’s along with a heat index in the triple-digit range, a heat advisory has
been posted for Plymouth County and all of northwest Iowa. Health officials are
reminding people to stay hydrated, and stay indoors, or in a cool, shady area.
Floyd Valley Healthcare’s Mary Jo Clark serves as the Supervisor of Nursing.

The nursing supervisor also reminds people to stay away from caffinated and
alcoholic beverages.

Clark says people on medication may experience de-hydration even quicker under the
extreme heat conditions.

Clark reminds people to keep a watchful eye on the elderly during these hot days,
as they are more susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Clark says Floyd Valley Healthcare has had a number of reported cases of heat
exhausion.
(Le Mars) — On rare occasions, during these extreme hot days, we will hear of an
incident where a small infant child or a pet has been left in a hot car with the
windows up, while the parent is busy shopping or conducting an errand. Le Mars
Police Chief Stuart Dekkenga says officers will try to find the owner of the car
otherwise, they will take action to break the vehicle’s window.

The police chief says criminal charges may be filed against the owner of the
vehicle if either a small child or a pet are left alone in a hot vehicle.
