Floyd Valley Healthcare Honored On National List

(Le Mars) — Floyd Valley Healthcare of Le Mars was recently acknowledged as 2016’s
one of the top 50 Critical Hospitals to Know. The listing appeared in the Becker’s
Hospital Review. Floyd Valley Administrator Mike Donlin shared the news with the
board of trustees during their monthly meeting held Tuesday evening. Donlin says
he first heard of the news from a friend

Donlin explains the listing is an accumulation of various past honors.

Orange City and Estherville were two other Iowa hospitals to have made the Becker’s
listing.
It has now been two months since the new north addition first opened to see
patients. Donlin says he has heard generally good comments from staff and patients
about the new clinic.

Donlin anticipates the first surgeries in the new upper level surgery centers may
take place within the next few weeks.

Fatal Shooting Of Bank Robber Is Justified

FORT MADISON, Iowa (AP) – State authorities say the fatal shooting of a suspected
bank robber in Fort Madison was justified.
Thirty-seven-year-old Lafayette Evans, of Nashville, Tennessee, died of a
single gunshot wound to the chest on June 29.
The Office of the Iowa Attorney General said Tuesday that Fort Madison police
officers David Doyle and Benjamin Brown shot at Evans to protect Lee County
Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Sproul, who was under fire from Evans.
The office says Evans fired two shots into the bank ceiling during his robbery
of Fort Madison Bank and Trust Co. He had more than $224,000 in cash with him when
he fled the building.
Officers say they spotted Evans running from the bank and say Evans fired
several more shots, hitting a patrol car being driven by Sproul.

Airport Creates Service Dog Restroom

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Des Moines airport officials will have to spend up to
$100,000 to build a room for service dogs to relieve themselves inside the
terminal.
The “service animal relief area” will be built in a boarding area and will
require removing about 10 seats.
Airport Executive Director Kevin Foley told board members Tuesday that the
bathroom is required under an update of the federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The
update requires all airports with more than 10,000 passengers a year to have a
service animal relief area inside their terminals.
The Des Moines facility will have artificial turf and a sink for animal owners
to wash their hands and a system for washing down the turf afterward.
