COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – A Nebraska man has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for a fatal hit-and-run in western Iowa.

44-year-old Tracy Peniska, of Omaha, pleaded guilty Tuesday to a felony count of leaving the scene of a fatal crash and a misdemeanor count of obstruction.

Peniska was given the jail sentence for the obstruction count. He got two years’ probation for the felony count, but faces up to five years in prison if his deferred judgment on that count is revoked.

Zebra Mussels Spread In Missouri River

Authorities say invasive zebra mussels have spread the entire length of the Missouri River in eastern Nebraska.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission said in a Thursday news release that the zebra mussel population in Lewis and Clark Lake has moved farther west on the Nebraska side.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said in June that zebra mussel larvae have been detected in west Omaha’s Lake Zorinsky as well.

The small black-and-white striped mussels, native to eastern Europe, are voracious eaters, gobbling up plankton that many native freshwater fish need to survive.

The mussels can also attach themselves to boat motors, bait buckets and dam mechanisms, causing damage to motors and facilities.
