Dean Foods Has Semi Trailer Overturn On Lot

(Le Mars) — Shortly after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, the Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department was called to Dean Foods on Lincoln Avenue and 12th Street SW where a semi truck and trailer had overturned, spilling some fluids. The Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene with their Hazardous Materials trailer. Unofficially, it appears the truck that is used to help shuttle the refrigerated trailers from the lot to the loading dock made too sharp of a turn, causing the trailer to shift its load and overturn on its side. The overturned trailer caused the shuttle truck to be on its back axle with the cab sticking up in the air, much like when a motorcycle performs a wheelie. It is not known what are the fluids that were leaking from the refrigerated trailer, but one can imagine it may have been dairy products. Fire officials placed a dam on the concrete lot to block the spilled fluids from draining into a ditch and ravine. It did not appear there were any injuries with the incident.

Reported Reckless Driver Involved With Auto Accident

(Le Mars) — Several 9-1-1 calls were received Tuesday morning at around 6:10 a.m. by the Plymouth County and Woodbury County Communications Centers regarding a reckless driver heading northbound on Highway 75 from Sioux City. Initially, Plymouth County deputies and the Iowa State Patrol were unable to locate the suspect vehicle. However, at approximately 6:25 a.m. a personal injury accident was reported at county road K-22 and 140th street in Plymouth County. When responding officers arrived at the collision site, the vehicle was identified as the vehicle in question that was called in as the reckless driver. 40 year old Chad Bechtel of Ankeny, Iowa was operating a 2017 Chevy Impala heading northbound on county road K-22. Bechtel crossed the center line striking a 2002 Ford Escape being driven by 51 Maureen Hansen of Rock Valley. The Bechtel vehicle rolled and came to rest on its top on the shoulder of the road. The Hansen vehicle came to rest in a nearby farmyard. Bechtel and Hanson both refused medical treatment at the scene. A passenger in the Bechtel vehicle was taken by Akron Ambulance to Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars for a suspected drug overdose. Bechtel was evaluated by a Drug Recognition Expert from the Le Mars Police Department and subsequently arrested by the Iowa State Patrol for operating while intoxicated and driving left of center. He was booked into the Plymouth County jail. The Iowa State Patrol is conducting the crash investigation with assistance from the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office. Thousands Attend Slain Police Officer’s Funeral

ROCKWELL CITY, Iowa (AP) – At least 1,000 law enforcement officers and much of the small Iowa community of Rockwell City have gathered to mourn the death of a 24-year-old police officer nearly a week after he and another officer were gunned down in their patrol cars.
Residents and officers packed into a middle school gymnasium Tuesday to remember Justin Martin, a rookie officer in the Des Moines suburb of Urbandale who grew up in Rockwell City.
An Urbandale man is charged with first-degree murder in the Nov. 2 shooting deaths of Martin and 38-year-old Des Moines police Sgt. Anthony Beminio.
Speaking at the service, Urbandale Police Chief Ross McCarty described the “great pain” of Martin’s death, saying the department was “not prepared to have his life stolen from us.” Le Mars Police officer Kevin Vander Vegt and Plymouth County Sheriff’s Deputy Lt. Jeff Tebrink both attended the funeral for the killed Urbandale police officer.
