Plymouth County Authorities Identify Fatal Accident Victim

(Le Mars) — Plymouth County authorities have identified the victims from Tuesday’s fatal accident that occurred on Highway 3 about two miles east of Le Mars. The accident happened at about 12:35 p.m. 89 year old Therese Freking of Le Mars was fatally wounded as a result of the accident. Freking was driving a
2000 Buick heading westbound when she lost control of her vehicle from the snow and ice, and moved into the path of a Chevy Traverse going eastbound on Highway
3, and driven by Susan Sievers of Remsen. Sievers was unable to avoid the Freking vehicle and struck the right side of the Buick. Sievers was injured during the accident, and was transported to Floyd Valley Healthcare. The investigation is continuing by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State
Patrol, and the Plymouth County Medical Examiner. Road and weather conditions were a factor in the accident.

Senate Bill Would Ban Soda Purchases Using Food Stamps

A bill supporters had hoped would address what some have termed “water dumping” would actually forbid welfare recipients in Iowa from buying soda pop with their benefits. The bill was discussed in an Iowa Senate subcommittee Wednesday. Senator Tom Shipley, a Republican from Nodaway, says his constituents have complained people are buying water with their benefits, pouring out the liquid in the parking lot and then taking the empty container back for the deposit money.

Iowa’s nickel deposit law does not apply to water bottles, but retailers that sell the five-gallon containers of water used in water coolers often charge a deposit fee of up to eight dollars. A spokeswoman for the Iowa Department of Human Services says in 2014, federal rules changed and anyone buying the huge bottles of water with food stamp benefits must pay the deposit fee with their own money. Senator Shipley has tabled the bill that deals with the state’s nickel deposit fee and soda pop sales to welfare recipients. Senator Herman Quirmbach (KWIRM-bawk), a Democrat from Ames, compares the bill to former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg attempt to limit the size of sugary soft drinks sold in his city.

The Iowa Grocers Association has “concerns” about a state ban on welfare recipients using their benefits to buy soda. The Iowa Beverage Association and Hy-Vee are opposed to the concept.

Omaha Teacher Is Facing Another Child Sex Assault Case

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – An Omaha schoolteacher is facing another child sex assault case.

A Douglas County judge ruled Wednesday that Daryl Clark will stand trial in a case that dates back to the 2004-2005 school year.

Prosecutors say a 24-year-old woman approached police after learning that Clark had been charged. She told authorities that Clark molested her when she was 11 and he was tutoring her at Beveridge Magnet Middle School. Her allegations were investigated but he was not prosecuted.

A district spokeswoman says he wasn’t fired then because there wasn’t enough information to do so. He was transferred to Monroe Middle School, where he was arrested in the most recent case.

Clark has pleaded not guilty to three counts of child sexual assault and one of having a firearm on school grounds.
