Remsen St. Mary’s Takes Third At State Tournament

DES MOINES — Sophomore Cole Watts had a pair of foul shots for No. 4 Montezuma with l.9 second to play that could have sent the game into overtime, but Watts could only hit the first and his missed second free throw was rebounded by Austin Jensen as Remsen St. Mary’s held on for a 50-49 upset victory in the Class 1A consolation game Thursday at the boys State tournament in Des Moines.  The Hawks winning margin came on Spencer Schorg’s two foul shots with 22.4 seconds to play to snap a 48-all tie.  Schorg finished with 14 points to lead St. Mary’s while Blaine Harpenau had 13.  Trey Schearer had 23 points for the Braves and Hunter Ray finished with 13.  This marked the third straight year that St. Mary’s has played for third place but the first time they have won the consolation game.  Remsen St. Mary’s wrapped up a 21-7 season with the victory and the expectations are already running high for next year as everybody returns.
