Construction Continues At 2nd Ave. NW – 1st St. NW

(Le Mars) — Contractors with Vander Pol Excavating of Orange City are busy tearing out the intersection at 2nd Avenue NW and 1st Street NW.  The intersection is near the KLEM radio offices.  City officials say construction is focusing on repairing two storm cellar intakes that needed repairs.  Scott Kneip, Superintendent for the City’s Public Works Department says contractors hope to be done prior to the Sesquicentennial celebration, but says crews were delayed for nearly two weeks due to the constant rain showers, and due to the delay of the construction work at the intersection of Highway 3 and 75.  Kneip says a more realistic date for completion may be June 18th.  Kneip says the intersection previously had concrete paving with a two inch layer of asphalt on top.  He says new concrete will be poured within the next few days.  The city will not be using any asphalt covering.  Noting the intersection has a busy traffic flow, Kneip says it will consist only of concrete paving, which should provide many years for a good intersection.
