STATE TOURNAMENT AT PRINCIPAL PARK IN DES MOINES

DES MOINES — Sophomore Shane Neighbor executed a perfect bases-loaded squeeze bunt with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday afternoon to give No. 3 Alburnett a 4-3 victory over No. 10 Remsen St. Mary’s in the 1A State semifinals at Principal Park.  The game featured an outstanding pitcher’s duel between the Hawks’ Blaine Harpenau and the Pirates’ Keaton Parker.  The two matched zeros until the fifth when both teams scored three times.  St. Mary’s took a 3-0 lead on consecutive RBI singles by Spencer Shorg, Blaine Harpenau and Skylar Waldschmitt.  Alburnett answered with a three-run fifth when Reed Stallman tripled to right on a drive that one-hopped the wall, driving in two runs.  Stallman scored on Keaton Parker’s single through a drawn-in infield.  Harpenau walked the lead-off man in the seventh inning on a 3-2 pitch that put him at 110 pitches for the game, the limit for a day by a pitcher as set by the IAHSAA.  Skylar Waldschmitt took over and gave up two hits to load the bases before striking out Luke Smith.  Shane Neighbor, however, was able to successfully get a bunt down toward third for the winning hit.  Spencer Schorg and Skylar Waldschmitt actually collided trying to desperately field the bunt and fell down.  The loss was pinned on Harpenau, dropping his record to 15-and-1.  Parker went the distance for Albernett to improve to 13-and-2.  Alburnett (34-5) meets top-rated Newman Catholic (37-3) for the 1A State championship Saturday at 11 am.  Remsen St. Mary’s ends the season at 27-and-8 and return their entire roster next season.

The Astros ace took a two-hit shutout into the seventh and exited after Kyle Seager led off with a home run.

NEW YORK (AP) – Gio Urchela’s two-run homer sparked a six-run third off David Price as the New York Yankees knocked off the Red Sox, 7-4 to complete a four-game sweep. Aaron Judge belted a solo homer and Mike Tauchman capped the big rally with a two-run single. Boston dropped its eighth in a row despite home runs by Christian Vazquez and Michael Chavis.

CHICAGO (AP) – The Chicago Cubs completed a big three-game sweep of the Brewers as Jason Heyward drove in three runs and Yu Darvish pitched five effective innings in a 7-2 victory that gives Chicago a 1  1/2-game lead over St. Louis in the NL Central. Heyward and Kyle Schwarber homered as the NL Central leaders won for the 11th time in 13 games at Wrigley Field. The Cardinals were 4-2 losers in Oakland as Tanner Roark allowed a run and four hits over five innings of his Athletics debut.

ATLANTA (AP) – Tucker Barnhart launched a tiebreaking, three-run homer off Shane Greene in the 10th inning to send the Reds to a 6-4 victory in Atlanta. Ronald Acuna, Jr. hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth off Amir Garrett to complete the Braves’ comeback from a 3-0 deficit before Barnhart belted his first round-tripper since May 25.
